Prayer Request 1/29 - 2/4

Tuesday
As early as 2009 there were 100 million cases of mental illness of varying degrees in China and sixteen million of them were severe. That means that one out of thirteen people in China has mental illness. The label “Mentally ill” is a unique phenomenon in China and actually inflates the true number of mental cases. In every church there are a few cases but no one really knows how to help them or deal with them. It is rather shameful for the family also. We ask the Lord for believers who are willing to reach out and help. Let us pray for those who suffer from this problem and their families.
Wednesday
In China many are labeled as “Mentally ill” not by doctors but merely because they have been seeking reprieve for injustice. Once they have been so labeled, they are locked up and receive long term treatment against their will. Let us pray for all the believers who care for family members with mental illness, mental retardation, and other handicaps. Unfortunately, these people are not accepted or even welcomed in churches. May each of us appreciate the heart of Jesus even more than we have before.
Thursday
The severity of mental health problems in China is particularly acute. Mental illness ranks first in the total burden of all illnesses and accounts for twenty percent of the total public expenditures for illness. About sixteen million Chinese have been diagnosed with severe mental illness at the present time. The lack of access to medical help for patients with mental illness is a huge problem, especially in rural areas. It also seems that poverty and mental illness go together. May the Lord have mercy and grant healing as well as helping others to share the love of Jesus with them.
Friday
There are one hundred million people in China who have mental illness of varying degrees but fewer than half of the people there have a basic awareness of mental illness and even fewer people get the medical care needed. China lacks the infrastructure and personnel to care for mental illness since there is only one psychologist for every 100,000 people. The majority of pastors in China do not have any training to know how to help their flocks with emotional or psychological issues. We ask the Lord to give each of the shepherds who must care for those who suffer depression (a very common illness) wisdom and compassion.
Saturday
At the present time China really lacks medical care and management for all of her mentally ill patients. Most of the cases of mental disorders are still in the “Laissez-faire” state and it is nearly impossible to prevent them from injuring themselves, committing suicide, murder, assault, or running into other unforeseen circumstances. Family members of those who have mental illness feel they are helpless and that no one really cares about them. We pray that churches will be the first to be sensitive to those who are ill mentally and not despise them but be willing to help the families who struggle with caring for those who are mentally ill.
Sunday
Even among those who have found work in China, job satisfaction is low with about two-thirds of 2011 graduates saying they have worked at least one to two different jobs since they graduated. Job-hopping is common and only 1.6 percent of the university graduates were satisfied with their jobs. There are always believers who change churches because they are not happy with the teaching or the fellowship. This has become even more common now in China. We pray for spiritual growth for all who have not been able to stay long, get involved, or stay committed in a church.
Monday
Since the price of property has become so high, owning a home is increasingly more difficult and more than seventy percent of college students in China now feel as if they belong to the “lower” or “lower-middle” class of people. It is sad that young people feel they belong to the lower classes but even in their churches many of them feel the same way because they have little “say” in the churches or their needs are not really met. We pray again that churches will reach out and embrace young people, value their presence and their input.

Prayer Request 1/22 - 1/28

Tuesday
Beijing and cities in northern China were shrouded in a thick haze recently. Fog, high humidity, lack of wind compounded by heavy pollution and burning of coals for heating made the air quality the worst in recent years. Let us pray for all the believers who have respiratory illness and especially the elderly and the young children. May the Lord give them the good health in the bitter cold weather. We too remember all the church activities that may be affected by the bad air quality.
Wednesday
Undeniably, Chinese are a proud race with great pride in her cultural and ethnic heritage. Yet, such pride seriously hamper China churches’ missionary desire and effort. Chinese send out missionaries not merely to save lost souls, they feel they are best suited to be cross-cultural missionaries now. Let us pray that we have great burden and urgency to save all the lost souls. We ask the Lord to motivate and compel them to spread the Gospel, especially among the church leaders. May the Lord remove the nationalistic pride and give us His humility.
Thursday
China leads the world having the most people able to get online, but only 19.1% of Chinese are actually online which is lower than the global average of 21.1%. Internet is the gateway for Chinese to reach the rest of world despite the Great Fire Wall. We pray that more Chinese are able know the redemption of Jesus and eternal hope via Christian websites. And, more Chinese believers are blessed by the Christian content online.
Friday
Chinese teens addicted to Internet games is a huge problem. One factor is lack of alternatives and space for recreation. To them, other types of recreation are not appealing or the cost is not affordable. We want to pray for wisdom and patience for believer parents whose children are addicted in games. We must pray for Chinese churches who have little to offer both the teens grew up in Christian homes and practical helps for parents. May the Lord have mercy on us!
Saturday
In some part of western China, it is hard to find a church even in city with population of half a million. It is not likely that people would have heard the Gospel there. Even till today, vast majority of Chinese churches are in the southeastern and coastal provinces. As many churches think of the global mission, we pray that believers will not forget that much of the western China remain unreached, especially among the Muslim minorities. May the Lord add to us all, the vision and burden of reaching out to people who have never heard of Jesus Christ.
Sunday
At best, six percent of Chinese in China are Christians, this number include those in the house church. But, the vast majority of believers are Han Chinese. Among the 55 ethnic minorities, less than 1% is Christian and in the central and western China have little Christian presence. Let us pray for the evangelism effort among the minorities groups. Han Chinese Christians forget that ethnic minorities have totally different cultures and are not inferior, we ask the Lord to give churches a passion to carry the Gospel to the ethnic minorities.
Monday
The younger generation of Chinese have a complicated and mixed feeling toward Japan. They love the Japanese electronics and adore the Japanese pop culture, but they are anti-Japan because of the nationalistic sentiment. We pray for the young generation of believers so they will catch the vision in sharing the Gospel, able to accept the poor and marginalized people in their community first with God’s love and righteousness, rather than overwhelmed with mere nationalistic pride.

Prayer Request 1/15 - 1/21

Tuesday
Many Chinese believers do not understand the Biblical teaching of marriage. Young believers even live together on a trial basis before their marriage. After living together for a while, they ask to be married by the pastor in church. We pray for guarding of hearts of all believers, not to be swayed by the cultural and societal norm. We pray that preachers can teach effectively and early so Christians will not make mistakes because of their ignorance of God’s desire and plan for marriage.
Wednesday
When Chinese pastors evaluate why their young people live together before marriage, they discovered that one reason is that “everyone else is living together”. However, churches have not taught about marriage and young people do not know living together is not Biblical at all. In general, Chinese believers do know trial marriage is not correct, but among some urban churches, young people do not think it is against our faith. Let us pray for all believers who are in love and considering marriage - may the Lord give them understanding of His will.
Thursday
Many urban churches have many young intellectuals and their leaders who are recent college graduates. It is a good thing but because they lack life experience which comes with age, they are not able to effectively empathize with difficult situations in life and be effective shepherds. We ask the Lord to give wisdom and empathy to all young pastors as they minister to people who are older and with many personal issues. May the Lord give them humility and above all, compassion as they give advice and guidance with God’s own promise and comfort of the Spirit.
Friday
As the Chinese society becomes more complex and education level of believers continue to rise, believers are no longer satisfied with the one-way, top -down style of teaching of truth. We need to pray for the quality of shepherds China churches need now and in the future. Churches need pastors who are better and well-versed in everything. We ask the Lord for not only quality of better equipped church workers but also for more of them to minister in all churches.
Saturday
Some Chinese are economically backwards and the residents spend much time not being productive but rather living easy life. These cities have many shops catering exclusively to playing mahjong and people spend more time in gambling rather than working. Gambling is pervasive in the level of city, creating much social ills, and leads to low productivity. We beseech the Lord in changing such evil influence. We need to Lord to soften the hard soil in people’s hearts, to allow the seeds of the Gospel to grow and lead to healthy value system and positive lifestyle.
Sunday
In China, plenty of people are so addicted to mahjong gambling, that their family and marriage suffer terribly, ending in divorces. Many Chinese admire historical heros, have little interest in Christianity and even reject it as foreign. It is true that evangelism in China is no long easy as it once was. We ask the Lord to rekindle in us the passion and fire to share the Good News of Jesus. It is true that people are not as receptive but more Christians must have the burden to evangelize.
Monday
It can be said that Chinese churches demand better quality in their pastors. In addition to the spiritual knowledge and wisdom, churches expect their shepherds to know how to encounter the society and help their flocks to navigate in today’s complex society. We pray that all the Chinese pastors will have the heart of a father, knowing how to guide with experience and expertise. We too pray that more believers will step up to help their pastors in serving in church.

Prayer Request 1/8 - 1/14

Tuesday
Employment prospects for many university students in China are looking increasingly grim with only 76% of the 2012 graduates being able to find a job. Only 30% of those graduating felt they would be able to successfully find work and most lacked confidence in the job market. Many college students accept Jesus while they are in school but after they graduate are lost to follow-up or stop attending church. Let us pray for all the Christian college students that they will continue to grow in their faith and that there will be people who can help them to connect to churches near their work.
Wednesday
China is suspected to be the source of counterfeit drugs that have held back the fight against malaria in Africa. This past year officials have shut down a thousand small companies that manufacture counterfeit medicine. Even the people in China themselves are leery about the efficacy of drugs made there. Many naïve and unsuspecting believers are led astray by cults or foreign religions that claim to be Christian. Let us pray that churches will be bold in preaching against false teachers and prophets who are savage wolves in sheepskins.
Thursday
Nearly half of Chinese elderly live alone. Filial piety remains the centre of China's moral compass, and has been incorporated into all of the country's major religions and belief systems. We pray that Christians will be a great example of those who honor parents and our God is glorified. As we honor our elderly parents, we know not only God is watching us, and so are our own children watching how we treat their grandparents.
Friday
The new version of "24 acts of filial piety” are guidelines urging people to listen to their parents' reminiscences, teach them how to get on the Internet, take pictures of them, say “I love you” out loud, help them through what bothers them, and support their hobbies.Chinese are shy in showing affection verbally. All these reminders are good for believers too. Let us pray for our parents, not only for healthjoy, but having ability to enjoy lifebeing independent, but also loved by their children and grandchildren.
Saturday
The new version of "24 acts of filial piety” ask children to make sure their parents’ health insurance is up to date and take them for medical appointments. To have plenty of communication with parents, take parents to important social occasion, take them to visit work place and take them to vacation or visit favorite places. There are plenty of Christians who spent more time for church related matters and ignored their own family. We ask the Holy Spirit to convict us of these mistakes and oversight. We pray that our family will appreciate our dedication to God is not in vain at all, and they are blessed by it.
Sunday
The new "24 acts of filial piety” includes a child should try to exercise with his/her parents, get involved in their activities, go with them to visit their old friends and go see an old movie with them together. Spending time with parents takes times and patience, and it is hard to balance demand from children and parents in the same time. We pray for wisdom and remember God’s promises that God honor us when we honor our parents.
Monday
What will the churches in China look like in the future? At the present time there are many churches springing up in the cities but the vast majority of them are independent and not connected with others. Believers usually do not know about believers in other, even nearby churches. Leaders in many Chinese churches are considering joining a fellowship of churches or a denomination so they can become stronger and exchange resources. We pray about this trend and ask God to help Christians to be able to have more fellowship with other Christians and support each other.

Prayer Request 1/1 - 1/7

Tuesday
China opened the world's longest high-speed rail line that more than halves the time required (8 hours) to travel from the country's capital in the north to Guangzhou. The government plans to build a grid of high-speed railways with four east-west lines and four north-south lines by 2020. Chinese churches have largely been isolated in the past because of distances. As travel becomes more convenient, we pray that churches will have more dialogue and interaction, and there will be more sharing of resources in terms of speakers and training.
Wednesday
The new Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed railway traverses through Shijiazhuang, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, covering the northern, central, and the Pearl River Delta economic zones. It is a great economic boost to cities along the route, especially Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou.Other than in Beijing, Christian churches are considered weak in all the cities along this new train route. We pray that God will bring revival to all the churches on this new route, especially in Wuhan and Changsha, where the hearts of people are hard and resistant to the Gospel.
Thursday
The number of China's floating population, those who have left their hometowns where they were registered and have a "hukou" and are now living unregistered, reached 230 million in 2011-- seventeen percent of the total population. We pray for wisdom and insight for the leaders of the churches in China so they know how to reach the migrant workers in the city more effectively. Many of the "floating" people have no one to care for them and are rejected and despised.
Friday
The average age of China's floating population is about 28 years. Those who are from villages and were born after 1980 account for about half of this number. The majority of these young people were born in the cities and do not know how to farm. Most likely they will never return to the villages. These young immigrants represent a huge harvest field but churches really do not understand how to reach them or reap the harvest. May the Lord have mercy on us and help us learn how to accept the younger generation, especially those who do not have a college education.
Saturday
It can be said that most of the floating population in China has settled down in the cities. More than thirty percent of them have lived in the city for more than five years and have worked there for more than four years. On the average they return to their home villages barely twice a year. It is utterly sad that once believers from the villages go to work in the cities, the vast majority of them stop attending church. We pray for them that they will hang on to their faith and that more of them will continue to pray and read the Word. Young rural believers need to be better equipped to face the world before they leave home.
Sunday
In China, seventy-two percent of the migrant families rent. They feel that affordability of housing and education for their children are the key factors deciding whether they can stay in the city where they work. Migrant families are by nature renters and after paying their rent and trying to fit into their new neighborhood, they have little strength to seek out a place of worship. We ask our Lord for grace for all of those believers who rent. May they have joy because they place their trust in God.
Monday
Less than thirty percent of migrant workers have joined the social insurance system (retirement, medical insurance, disability, unemployment, or maternity benefits) with their employers. Most pastors in the house churches have no benefits available to them. Their children cannot get into schools where they live because they do not have the proper residency papers. We pray for this utterly thorny issue so that pastors will be able to focus on their ministry and not give up.
