Prayer Request 6/30 - 7/6

TuesdayAlthough many churches in China are beginning to teach the subject of Biblical marriage and how to build a godly family, divorce is now more common among believers and even church leaders than in the past. We pray that believers will honor the Lord with their families and avoid any stumbling in their marriages. We also pray that churches will redouble their efforts to preach God's word on how to glorify Him in marriage and family.
Wednesday
In China, about one in thirteen people suffers from mental illness. More and more high school students and even children are being diagnosed with varying degrees of mental disorders. Churches there do not have resources to help believers with family members who are mentally ill. We pray for love, compassion, and a willingness to help all believers with mental illness rather than ignoring them or being judgmental toward them.
Thursday
Severe depression is common in the villages in China. Serious mental illness and alcohol abuse are more common in the villages than in the cities.Churches are having more and more members with mental illness but the pastors are not equipped to counsel or help them. We pray for more resources and training for pastors so they can provide practical help to those afflicted.
Friday
The cost of living is rising rapidly in China and operating expenses for churches have increased significantly as well. Pastors and church workers face the rising costs of living expenses and transportation to do their daily visitation. We pray for increased giving by believers as their churches face increased costs of ministry and that they will generously support their pastors and church workers. We pray, too, for God's provision and faith to trust God for the impoverished pastors.
Saturday
Due to inflation, in China some churches are unable to provide money for living expenses for full-time workers. To keep healthy, some co-workers have to go out and earn money to be able to feed their families. Many pastors consider themselves as "tentative" workers but their hearts are full of guilt. Pray that that there will be full-time workers who are able to serve and not have to worry about family economic problems and their children's education.
Sunday
As the cost of living soars in China, more and more financially poor churches are not able to support a full-time pastor. Many pastors are forced to take a side job in order to provide for their families. Many pastors feel guilty and defeated because they can serve the church only part time. We pray for all of those pastors still serving their churches full time. May the Lord relieve their financial worries and provide for their families as well as the educational expenses of their children.
Monday
Many new Christians in China do not know that traditional ancestor worship is not Biblical. For example, believers should not kneel and worship after the passing of parents and on special days of remembrance of their ancestors.May the Lord strengthen us to hold on to the principles of our faith and gain favor with our unbelieving relatives. May we be God's witnesses in our families.

Prayer Request 6/23 - 6/29

Tuesday"Kan bing nan,"or "It's hard to see a doctor," aptly describes China’s oversubscribed, underfunded, often corrupt, health system. In frustration, patients attack their physicians and bribery is very common. Chinese patients and their doctors have a tense relationship. Open complaints and verbal attacks are not uncommon among churches in China, leading to church splits or loss of faith. We pray that believers know how to manage conflicts, not resorting to gossip, name-calling and even physical attacks.
Wednesday
In China the relatives of patients in the hospital often gather in the waiting room or corridors or camp out in wards cooking for and tending to the sick to make up for the inadequate nursing they are given. They also stage noisy protests to get the attention of staff members. Many churches in China have no shepherd at all so the ministry and expenses are shouldered by lay people. We praise God for all of those who give and serve so faithfully. May the Lord richly reward them.
Thursday
China's medical system is a "market of distrust," An emphasis on profits, a culture of "gift giving" and a lack of professional ethics have produced a difficult atmosphere. Churches in China have a similar lack of confidence issue, with distrust between believers and their leaders. We pray for a spirit of unity for all churches, so leaders will care for their sheep willingly, not to lord over them but rather imitateJesus.
Friday
After decades of market liberalization as hospitals sought to generate revenue, contributing to treatment shaped by commercial rather than medical concerns, trust is gone. The conflict really is between patients and doctors. Lack of trust for leaders and leaders unwilling to improve are reasons of churches without unity and growth. We pray for healing of the Holy Spirit, bring revival to churches, so we will all submit to Christ Jesus and follow His leading.
Saturday
The government claims 90 percent of Chinese have some health insurance, but underfinanced state programs leave many patients covering the bulk of their costs themselves. We pray for all believers with chronic illnesses, especially those who are poor. May the Lord have mercy on them and heal them so they know our Lord will never abandon them.
Sunday
The Chinese government has repeatedly issued notices demanding that patients not give bribes and that physicians should not take them but many people believe that medical personnel will do a better job if they receive monetary gifts. When everyone is giving or receiving money under-the-table, we pray for integrity for all the church leaders and believers alike, knowing we do everything from our hearts, cheerfully and willingly, not for gain and not merely to please men, but rather to please God.
Monday
A hongbao typically of 1000-5000 renminbi per envelope ($160-$800 US) is common in China. Thirty-one percent of the people said they had offered a hongbao and that in 81 percent of the cases they were accepted. The families of patients give bribes to get favorable attention and better treatment. We pray that no churches would ever practice favoritism or give the impression of special treatment to anyone because our God is impartial and wants us to treat all people the same whether they are rich or poor.

Prayer Request 6/9 - 6/15

TuesdayChina has broadened its ideological drive against Western liberal ideas by attacking all foreign textbooks. The Minister of Education warns against the "Western Values" imported in textbooks. We praise God for all of the college fellowships, some attached to churches, some started by students, and some totally independent . No matter what their affiliation, we pray for faithful leaders who love the Lord.
Wednesday
The Communist Party is strengthening its control on the intellectual life in China and is eradicating avenues for spreading ideas about the rule of law, liberal democracy, and civil society which they regard as dangerous or contagious and feel it could undermine the power of the Party. Some "independent college fellowships" refuse to interact with other churches and instead develop into a church of their own. We pray for orthodox teaching, good role models, and the Lord's blessing with more students coming to know Jesus Christ.
Thursday
Party officials have a saying: "Never allow statements that attack and slander Party leaders to be heard in classrooms, never allow teachers to grumble and vent in the classroom passing on their unhealthy emotions to their students.""Independent college fellowships" complain that churches do not understand students. We pray that many church leaders will truly care about this ministry rather than seeing students as a burden and people who do not contribute to the offering.
Friday
Many colleges and universities in China have used English textbooks and translations of them have become popular. Many students who are aspiring to study or work abroad believe that mastering foreign works is essential to their success. Many church leaders are hesitant to go into college ministries because they perceive that working with students is politically sensitive and will attract undue interference by the police. We pray for courage to witness for Jesus and that churches will have vision and passion to evangelize.
Saturday
Chinese universities widely use foreign textbooks but professors often add a Chinese spin on the material. Much of that literature is about foreign problems and how foreigners approach them and this material is still ahead of life in China. Many leaders feel that student ministries require much but give little to the churches in return in the long term. We pray that students will grow spiritually and quickly find a church after they have accepted Jesus.
Sunday
While the Party in China is unlikely to ban English textbooks, it is determined to cleanse schools of politically troublesome ideas. Officials in the Department of Education demand that the leaders in the universities endorse this ideological clampdown. The government policy on schools can change anytime so we must continue to pray for college ministries. May the Lord bless all who sow the seed, those who water it, and the harvesters. We know He will greatly use the Christian college students.
Monday
On can find "direct sale" in churches throughout China, but a deeper problem is that the attitude of many pastors toward ministering in the churches has changed. Many now see the pastorate not as a calling but merely a job. We pray for godly men and women who will serve the Lord and His sheep faithfully in China. Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care... not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve... being examples to the flock. (1 Peter 5:2-3)

Prayer Request 6/2 - 6/8

TuesdayThirty years ago the Communist Party ran the headline, "It is good to have only one child. The government will support you when you get old." Now officials in Shanghai are appealing to couples to have more children and say it is "more suitable" to have two children. The great majority of the churches in China have no programs for children so we pray that parents will take the responsibility to raise godly children and "push" their churches to provide meaningful Bible teaching for children.
Wednesday
In the past, those who were in charge of planning the population for China have been ruthlessly evaluated by their superiors for their fulfillment of quantifiable targets, such as achieving a certain number of sterilizations, and more importantly ensuring that no parents exceeded their quota of offspring. Churches will definitely see an increase of little ones now. We pray that they will see that they can no longer ignore children's ministry and that many more parents will be willing to become Sunday school teachers.
Thursday
Under the relaxed rules for family planning which Shanghai put in place in early 2014, ninety percent of the women in the city who are of childbearing age are eligible to have a second child but so far only five percent have applied for permission to do so. We pray for Christian couples who plan to have or do have two children. May the Lord give them an extra measure of joy and love as they rear their children in the way that will please Him and not stray away from God when they are grown.
Friday
Young couples in Shanghai are hesitant to have two children due to the high cost (Living costs there are among the highest in China.) of raising and educating a child and the fact that many others are struggling to juggle a career and a family. Many Christian parents do not take their children to church because they want them to rest or because the church lacks any meaningful children's program. We pray that parents who are believers will not honor their children more than they honor God but will teach them to fear God.
Saturday
In late 2013, the government of China started to permit couples where only one partner was an only child to have a second baby. Experts say it is only a matter of time before China will lift all of the current restrictions on the two-child policy and allow anyone to have a second child. Churches can expect a boom in the number of children attending in the coming years. We pray they will help young parents to rear their children with Biblical values and teach them the way of the Lord. We pray, too, that Christian grandparents will do their part in getting the little ones into the church.
Sunday
In late 2011 one in four of the residents of Shanghai (which has the largest percentage of elderly people of any place in China) was older than sixty and by the end of 2015, it is predicted that nearly thirty percent of the people there will have reached that age. Believers in big cities in China are very busy and preoccupied by many things. We lift up the churches in Shanghai in prayer that the Lord will send a revival and stir their hearts to be on fire for Him and His people.
Monday
The fertility rate in Shanghai is reported to be the second lowest for a major city in China at 0.74 with Beijing being number one. The national rate was estimated to be l.18. Churches in Shanghai are rich in history and customs and it is also the seat of the Three-self churches. We beseech the Lord to revive the churches there. May He give them a renewed spirit and a breakthrough in their approach to evangelism along with freshness in their worship.
