Prayer Request 5/29-6/4

Tuesday
Young couples 25-28 years old are buying the most homes in China. Typically, they are accompanied by their parents to make the purchase. The one-child policy means that two sets of parents can help buy the house which is usually beyond the means of the young people themselves. This financial dependency creates a lot of pressure when a young couple reveals to their parents that they have accepted Jesus. We remember all the believers whose parents oppose their faith and even threaten to cut off financial support.

Wednesday
Of the 80,000 Chinese who became citizens of the USA in 2005, 65,000 were from Mainland China. During that same period American families adopted 8000 Chinese baby girls. The number of American families with Chinese babies is increasing and some are attending Chinese churches for the benefit of their children. Let us pray for the spiritual growth of the English ministry in the Chinese churches.

Thursday
In rural China many marriages are still arranged or the couple is introduced through a "mai ren"--usually a lady who knows both families. In the cities, marriage introduction services are a booming business for people from high-income busy professionals to men with few assets. Since many believers come to Christ after their marriage, they face tremendous differences in values and priorities with their spouses. Some even have to discontinue service in the churches. Let us pray for all whose spouses are not believers yet that they will be patient and be good witnesses.

Friday
In China, millions leave their spouses to go work in the cities but many of those marriages do not survive the separation. In Henan where people routinely go to the cities for better-paying jobs, sixty to seventy per cent of the divorces involve those people. Many church workers and believers are separated from their spouses for long periods of time with devastating results. Let us pray for the guarding of the hearts of all who are physically separated from their families because of work or ministries.

Saturday
Studies show that women in Hong Kong and Taiwan have a better education than their counterparts in inland China but they lag behind in terms of political and socio-economic influence. In the Three Self Churches, ordained women make up twenty-four percent of the ministers. Let us pray especially for these female leaders in the church--for their walk with the Lord, physical strength, and their weekly sermons.

Sunday
An old saying in Jiangxi Province goes, "Parents favor the youngest son but the grandparents favor the oldest grandson." Apparently the One-child Policy has eliminated this century-old practice but Chinese farmers and people in ethnic minorities often have several children and blatant favoritism is common. Many believers were victims of parental favoritism and struggle now to appreciate the unconditional love of the Heavenly Father. Let us pray for all believers who harbor doubts of God's love and His amazing grace.

Monday
The emergence of mega bookstore chains throughout China, Taiwan and Hong Kong has revolutionized publishing and also the lifestyle of readers. An abundance of titles covering all subjects and soothing ambience have created a new generation of readers. On the other hand, Christian publishing has languished as Christian readership drops, despite bourgeoning numbers of titles (mostly translated). Let us pray for all who are involved in Christian writing and publishing, since few of them are able to generate sufficient profit to expand.

Prayer Request 5/22 -- 5/28

Tuesday
In China business entertainment always means a lot of hard liquor and lavish meals. To curtail abuse of business entertainment, party officials propose to crack down by requiring receipts and imposing limits to the expenditures. Let us pray for all believers who in their line of work must attend such entertainment since business deals are always closed during such meals. We pray for their walk with the Lord, a keen sense of family and integrity that pleases God.

Wednesday
According to an official survey, a third of urban "one child" youth believe extra-marital affairs and premarital sex and "all right". College students cohabitating off campus and even in the dorm is accepted as the norm. Again, we pray urgently for the important student ministries near every college in China. We also remember the many new converts who struggle to live out Biblical purity and cut their ties from the past.

Thursday
Overseas returnees (hai gui), literally those who return to China after studying abroad, are making a significant contribution in governmental administration as well as in business. Many return with the sole purpose of starting churches and form vibrant house churches among college students and other returnees. Their familiarity with the culture makes it easier to start ministry. Let us remember all the churches involving the hai gui.

Friday
In 2006 among the recipients of national awards for technology and science achievement who are making a tremendous contribution to Chinese technological advancement, the majority are overseas returnee scholars (hai gui). An estimated ten percent of the returnees are Christians. We thank the Lord for this new crop of believers in China. May the Lord use them to make a great impact in the churches, society, and changing the perception that Christianity is not the religion of just peasants.

Saturday
China’s population, the world's largest, grew by almost 7 million people last year. China holds 20 percent of the world's population. Chinese men born after the 1970s have found it difficult to find a spouse, as many more baby boys were born than girls since the 1980s. Are China’s churches catching up with this continuing population growth and attracting more young people? Let us remember all the believers who are younger than 30 years; pray for their spiritual growth and willingness to serve under the leadership of those who are much older .

Sunday
A government directive said that China needs to raise the standard of quality for the police force. Only 16.5 percent of policemen have a college degree. Some say the police function basically as: "One third work hard, one third follow, and one third stand watching." The perception of police in the cities is changing from one that greatly feared them to one of despising them because of corruption. We pray for integrity and favor from God to all those who work in the Public Security and Religious Affair Bureaus at various levels .

Monday
Being a party member is absolutely critical in one's political advancement in China. There is still a minority of "non-party-talents" in various levels of the government but being a Christian openly is not advisable for those who seek political appointment. Many officials have accepted Jesus or become sympathetic to Christianity in their visit abroad. We uplift such sincere believers who remain "secret followers" and pray for the Holy Spirit to enlighten their personal Bible reading and strengthen their walk with Him .

Prayer Request 5/15 -- 5/21

Tuesday
Wenzhou, Zhejiang is famous for having 2000 plus churches in its 6-county vicinity, where house churches comprises the majority. Here, churches are divided into districts and pastored by preachers who preach from church to church. We thank the Lord for this unique growth in Wenzhou. Let us remember all the preachers there, mostly male, for diligence in their preaching, passion for studying the Word of God and desire to shepherd .

Wednesday
While many churches in China lack preacher, it is common that one preacher covers many churches. The designated preacher often will conduct the Communion when he or she is available. With such a lack of full time church workers, there is practically no meaningful follow up, caring or fellowship beyond the Sunday services. Let us lift up all the churches and those who serve as the contact in all the churches without a pastor .

Thursday
Which cities in China have the “personal feel”? Surprisingly, Lhasa in Tibet, Nanning in Guangxi and Changchun in Jilin are the top three. All these cities are considered “distant” from East China where most of the jobs are created. Lhasa has been hard soil for Christian workers, but we should not give up the work of the Gospel in Tibet despite many limitations and restrictions. Let us uplift churches in Nanning with prayers, as this is a poor province and has struggling churches .

Friday
People from Wenzhou are the Chinese Marco Polos, doing every kind of business in every corner of the globe, from mining in North Korea, to buying leather in Africa, to selling liquor in Iraq to soldiers, to exporting shrimp in Iceland. About 2 million Wenzhou people have left their homes in search of riches. Many of them are Christians and some are tent makers in setting up churches in the most unlikely places. Let us pray for this unique approach to missions and all the churches started abroad .

Saturday
One in three Chinese students studying abroad will return to China. The booming economy at home provides employment opportunities, especially for those who studied in Europe where local employment is nearly non-existent and immigration is difficult. Since most students will return to China, Chinese student ministries in Europe prove to be of great promise. The students there are also open to the gospel. Let us pray for the great need for student workers, discipleship of students, and the spiritual lives of the many who have returned to China .

Sunday
Unlike many other businesspeople in China who became rich overnight, almost all the Wenzhou people built up their wealth from nothing and amassed their fortune through years of hard work. Wenzhou believers have started many churches where they conduct their business. They have courageously reached out to the migrant workers, and sometimes are the only churches actively doing evangelism. Let us remember all these Wenzhou-related churches .

Monday
“Where do the Wenzhou people get their money to invest?” is a question many ask. The person who needs the capital will invite his friends or relatives to dinner and will start a “hui,” a private, personal lending association. In three months time, he will need to start to repay them one by one with a predetermined interest. Wenzhou churches tend to be very tight-knit too and ran by patriarchal figures. Let us pray for their young believers and leaders, who often feel stifled because their voices are not heard .

Prayer Request 5/8 -- 5/14

Tuesday
Many young people from Muslim ethnic minorities attend colleges in Xian and the government provides scholarships for those who show promise academically. Since this is often the first time they have been removed from Muslim influence in their entire lives, we pray for all Muslim students who attend Bible studies on campus and even those converted to Christianity who now face disapproval from their families and communities .

Wednesday
Six of every one hundred Chinese has some sort of handicap. In a society where competition for a job is fierce, a handicapped person as a rule has little chance to get meaningful employment so sadly, begging has become the "job" of choice for many of them. Most of the handicapped are kept hidden and are not seen out on the street. As Christ ministered to the lame and blind, let us pray for those who minister to the handicapped .

Thursday
In spite of the great variety of magazines in China from the ultra-glossy fashion ones to those with esoteric titles, there is only one Christian magazine called "Tien Fong" and it is available only through the mail. In the early 1950's there were 140 Christian magazines in China. Let us pray for the printing and distributing of more Christian magazines and literature which often contain the most current information many who do not have the Internet can get. May the Lord use them to build up and encourage all of the readers .

Friday
In a survey of the residents of Shanghai, only one percent wanted to be a laborer due to the low wages and lack of respect they saw. This comes as a slap on the Communist Party which was founded on the labor movement. Sadly, there are also few people who want to be workers for God due to low pay and parental pressure on their only child. Let us pray for God's help in the ever-increasing shortage of church workers in China .

Saturday
Advertising jingles are meant to be catchy and easy to remember. Unfortunately such terms as "Painless abortion", "Forget it, I will not share!", and "I'll enjoy it myself" have become very popular even among elementary school children. What does the church offer to catch the hearts of this generation of young people? Let us pray for all those who are in the process of preparing Christian curriculum, books, films, and websites intended for youth and children .

Sunday
As the architect of modern China, Deng called for a "cat that catches mice" but in retrospect we see that China did not have enough "good cats". Instead rampant corruption has created many, many "fat cats" at all levels of the government. In the past ten years we have also seen the dangerous decline of rural churches as people go into the cities for better lives. Let us pray for the church in China as she faces this great shift of population and continues her growth in this time of prosperity .

Monday
The key element of Den Xiaoping's master plan for economic reform was to "let some people get rich first" and, indeed a tidal wave of people did go into business and made great profit killing the patriotic, country-first doctrine Mao had promoted for decades. Deng regretted his greatest error that "the society lacks political education". Let us pray for the entire generation of believers who grew up in good times and are strangers to the sacrifice of the previous generation of believers. May they be strong in the Word of God and bring revival to the church .

Prayer Request 5/1 -- 5/7

Tuesday
Itinerary preachers are common in China, they preach in various meeting places (points) in the large system of churches (plain). They provide the only "trained" speaker for a local congregation. Most of them have limited training and are often known to travel with a personal collection of no more than 7 sermons. Let us uplift all the traveling preachers, for spiritual renewal, new insights into Word of God and protection from temptation and attack of the evil one .

Wednesday
Shanghai leads China in being a convenient city, but surprisingly Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia, is the runner up. Ningxia has a large number of Hui people who are Muslim. The only university there hosts the only Islam Study Center. Sharing the Gospel to the Chinese Muslim is difficult and also dangerous. Muslims tend to live in tight neighborhoods and distinguish themselves with their clothing. Let us remember all those who are involved in this, particularly the few churches in Ningxia .

Thursday
Residents of Hangzhou, Haikou, Chengdu, Kunming and Shanghai are most likely to express their desire to stay in their cities. But, most parents will want their children to settle in Beijing and Shanghai. All these cities are the key centers for China churches. All have large, open churches and very strong house churches. We lift up the two cities in the west, Chengdu and Kunming in particular, as they have special outreaches among the Tibetans and other ethnic minorities .

Friday
With the pressure to have a boy under the one-child policy, many illegal techniques are used to select male-sex during pregnancy. Chinese men born after the 1970s have found it difficult to find a spouse, as many more baby boys were born than girls since the 1980s. In contrast, China’s churches consist of an overwhelming majority of women--nearly 70%. We thank the Lord for the serving of the sisters, but we need to pray for the strengthening of male believers, since many believing husbands tend to be inactive and uninvolved in the church .

Saturday
China is also known as the "bicycle kingdom," home to a world-record 470 million bicycles; one in 3 persons own one. But, 1% of bicycles are stolen every year and everyone must face the annoyance of becoming a victim of theft. Church meeting places have many bicycles parked in front. While the police may not bother, someone must guard the bicycles to deter thefts. Let us pray for safety, freedom from disturbances, thefts and neighbors’ complaints of all churches, especially the house churches .

Sunday
It is said that people from Guangdong and Wenzhou are the best businessmen in China. But, even the Wenzhou businessmen have proven too tough to beat because they can cut cost and squeeze out any competition by bringing in their relatives. Many churches in China have links to their mother churches in Wenzhou, receiving financial support as well as the training of church workers. Let us pray for strong growth, solid teaching, and passion for missions in all of the Wenzhou-related churches .

Monday
Even with booming economy, competition for jobs is fierce and is expected to intensify, with projections that another 10 million people will join the ranks of the urban jobless by 2010. Many college graduates know that, inevitably, graduation means unemployment. For those college students who accepted Jesus but failed to land a job, it is very trying on their new found faith. Let us pray for the watering and growth of thousands of these new seedlings, as they learn to trust that God is good and faithful to them .
