Prayer Request 12/27/05--1/2/06

Tuesday
The Harry Potter books and movie reached the bestseller list in theaters throughout China. Among the total of twenty foreign films distributed in 2005, sixteen were American movies. Let us remember all the Christmas programs, concerts, and dramas put on by Christian actors and church groups in several cities. May their performances with or without preaching touch many who do not know the “Greatest Story Ever Told ”.

Wednesday
Teenage girls in Shanghai want to be a CEO, a manager, or a teacher while Japanese girls want to be a housewife, a flight attendant or a child-care worker. In China, women earn an estimated sixty-six percent of what men earn. Let us remember all the Chinese women pastors and church leaders. We pray, too, for all the young women God has called to serve Him and are in training now.

Thursday
All kinds of English-speaking contests are organized across China. Many parks have English corners. A good command of English is often the advantage and a key in a high competitive job market for college graduates. Teaching English is still the best way for most Westerners to share the gospel with the youth in China. Let us remember those who share Jesus in this way in schools, offices, or even in government agencies.

Friday
In his personal defense for the plight of coal miners dying daily, millions of poor and rampant corruption, one prominent social scientist said, “Who told you to be unfortunately born in China at this time?” We believe God has placed us in this time for a special purpose. Let us continue to uplift Chinese churches as they raise up tens of thousands of missionaries from their nation with the greatest population in the world .

Saturday
The wedding industry flourishes in China where ten million people marry annually. A rising standard of living combined with a craze for extravagant weddings from white gowns to a church wedding to a retro-Chinese style wedding brings the cost of a wedding, including the banquet to a possible $4,000 USD. Let us pray for all the believers who have married this year. May the Lord reign in their homes and in their commitment to serve the Lord and their fellowship with other young families.

Sunday
Urban Chinese women from 31-40 years old are the biggest consumers. One in five of married women unilaterally makes the decision on the purchase of a house, an automobile, and other expensive items. Women also make up the majority of the urban churches. Let us remember all the women who attend church alone (husbands are not believers or not involved). May their faith remain strong and may they continue to be a blessing to their family.

Monday
This is the busy month for job hunting for those graduating from college. Traditionally women still have a tougher time landing a good job than men do. On many campuses college women are posting ads seeking friendship with male students who likely already have a job. Let us remember the thousands of seminary students (official or underground, male or female) graduating next year as they begin to contemplate which church or congregation to serve.

Prayer Request 12/20--12/26

Tuesday
International protestors demonstrated and rioted in Hong Kong’s WTO meeting. More than 900 people, mainly South Koreans, were arrested in the largest riot since the 1995 riots in the Vietnamese refugee camps. Let us remember Hong Kong churches and their unique role in mission, with nearly 300 missionaries worldwide and much work with the open churches in interior China .

Wednesday
Fire at a hospital in Liaoyuan, Jilin killed 39, as many patients escaped by jumping off the building. There were 222,000 accidental fires with 2,000 deaths last year. During Christmas, many open churches have decorations or special programs which attract people to come in and attend service. Let us pray for healing and the finding of salvation in Christ in every church – a hospital for sinners .

Thursday
In January 2005, over five thousand Chinese Muslims chartered fifteen Boeing 777's to be a part of the pilgrimage to Mecca. This is the largest group that has gone since 1955 but next year they plan to take an even larger group mostly from Lanzhou, Beijing, and Urumqi. Muslims migrate to cities that seem to be more open to the gospel but even there, most have become more devoted to their own religion. Let us pray for those who are trying to reach Chinese Muslims for Christ .

Friday
An HIV-infected blood donor sold blood and infected twenty-five recipients in Jilin province. Despite regulations, some hospitals still fail to test blood. We praise the Lord that several churches in China have been sharing the gospel in AIDS-infected villages in Henan and there are now believers who have AIDS sharing Jesus with other victims .

Saturday
From the late 1970's to 1985 millions of young intellectuals returned to cities and divorced the wives whom they had married during the "exile" which came in the Cultural Revolution. The "left behind" women are now in their fifties and many have grown children. Many of them have become believers. Let us remember them as they age and pray for their spiritual walk with Jesus .

Sunday
"Too busy working and no time for dating" is creating many older single women (30 and over). When choosing a prospective son-in-law, sixty percent of parents expect to find a person with a similar or higher degree of education then their daughter has. Young professionals make up a large number of urban churches in China. Let us remember all the single believers and pray for patience, guidance, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit in their times of loneliness and family pressure .

Monday
The bird flu scare reduced the consumption of chicken in China by nearly fifty percent. Officials had a "chicken banquet" to educate people and show that eating cooked chicken was safe. During the SARS epidemic, church attendance suffered a big drop. Let us pray for all the special meetings and training sessions planned for this winter -- the season for training in rural churches ).

Prayer Request 12/13--12/19

Tuesday
Shockingly, college campuses are the biggest brothels in China! In Wuhan, nearly 10% of the university female students are involved in sex for money. Chinese educators struggled to rebuild morality with learning and knowledge. Let us remember again all the Bible studies groups in every campus. May the Lord guard all the hearts of young believers and seekers too .

Wednesday
Sichuan plans to develop itself as a major economic zone, combining both Chengdu, the capital and Chongqing, the largest metropolis in China. Christianity came to Sichuan early as missionaries traveled up the Yangtze River, but churches have historically been very weak. Let us pray for revival of churches in Sichuan and the role believers here can play with mission effort to neighboring Tibet .

Thursday
Are Chinese poor givers to charity? According to data from Anhui, wealthy individuals and companies give nearly nothing to charity. Most of the donations are from the common people as well as retired people. Giving in Chinese churches has historically been low. Let us pray for the spirit of generosity and thanksgiving for all believers .

Friday
The average Chinese tourist spends $987 US daily when abroad. Tourists usually live frugally but spend largely on name brands and jewelry. Experts say that Chinese spend on luxury items in order to show off to friends back home. Many Christians are able to go abroad now. Let us pray for their impact on the local church, that they may become a model of serving and giving .

Saturday
In 1950, China started the family revolution by enacting the first "Marriage Laws" which permitted divorce for any reason. In 1953, the divorce rate peaked at 53%, the highest ever. During the Cultural Revolution, marriage was often arranged by Party officials. Let us remember all the believers who are divorced, and pray for healing and ability to counsel others who have marital difficulties .

Sunday
There is a severe shortage of workers (nearly a million) for all the factories in the Pearl River Delta. Employers are forced to raise salaries by about 5% to attract workers from other provinces.Casual sex is rampant among the factory dormitories, leading to the high demand for abortion. Let us pray for the guarding of hearts for all believers, the Christian managers and workers alike .

Monday
Nearly 100,000 elderly Chinese come to the United States to visit their children and care for their grandchildren yearly. Most are from Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou, but many are also from various regions of China. Many of these seniors attend fellowships for senior citizens offered by Chinese churches and have come to know Jesus Christ. Some have even returned to China to start their own house churches. Let us pray for the ministries targeting these seniors .

Prayer Request 12/6--12/12

Tuesday
More bad news for Heilongjiang after the chemical contamination of city's water supply, an explosion claimed more than 170 victims in a government's "star" coal mine. Feverish demand for energy and unsafe condition has turned coal mining into the deadliest work. Let us remember all the believers who are miners, their spiritual role in their families and the churches they belong to .

Wednesday
Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li (both are non-Christians) will star in the "Memoirs of a Geisha". Chinese movies as well as Chinese actors/actresses are taking over Hollywood in unprecedented ways, both in box offices and in cultural influence. There are a handful of well-known entertainment celebrities who make their Christian faith public. Let us pray that they will have powerful testimonies and uncompromising moral standards as they impact viewers and especially Christian youth .

Thursday
In China, a growing group of extremely nationalistic and patriotic youth called Fengqing (angry youth) is using the internet as a platform to lambaste Japan. As China considers buying the Japanese Bullet Trains to improve its transportation system, a resurgence of anti-Japanese sentiment is brewing there. We pray for all Chinese believes to have a spirit of forgiveness and a burden to take the gospel to Japan.

Friday
Eighty percent of Chinese families have at least one son and those families who have more than two girls are most likely to give away girls or adopt them out. Recent population research confirms the Chinese preference to have a son as "retirement insurance". A preference for boys means parents will discourage a son from going into the ministry. Let us pray for faith and blessing for all parents whose children are involved in Christian ministry .

Saturday
What was once a bad memory for a whole generation of Chinese has now been made into collectibles. The bright propaganda invariably depicting soldiers, farmers, and laborers praising Chairman Mao has enjoyed resurgence as an art form. During the Cultural Revolution, possession of a Bible was an offense punishable even by death. Let us remember all those dear believers who secretly hand-transcribed the Word of God .

Sunday
Who are the most desirable men for millions of Chinese white-collared women? Zhang I Mo, film director, Yao ming and other actors and athletes top the list. Waiting for the man God has in mind is the lesson many Christian sisters face. Let us remember all the women believers who are of a marriageable age or remain celibate for the Lord .

Monday
In the Xinjiang grassland occupied by Muslim minorities, foxes have been released to control the mouse problem. This special breed of fox is more resistant to hunger and disease than ordinary foxes. Radio programming in local dialects is the only Christian medium which can penetrate these deeply Muslim communities. Let us pray for the faith of believers there and the often difficult community work done by Christians .

Prayer Request 11/29--12/05

Tuesday
Explosions at a chemical plant in Harbin contaminated the water supply of Heilongjiang province and are threatening neighboring Russia. Water supply to more than 3 million-plus residents in the city was turned off, and panic ensued. Churches in the northeast region of China are not in the news often, but they have come under attack of poisonous cult teaching of the Eastern Lightning in the past 2 years. Let us remember their fervent love for the Lord even in the season of bitter cold .

Wednesday
Bird flu hit Heishan, Liaoning, the “chicken coop” of China, which exports a third of eggs consumed nationwide. This week, the government shut down a drug company which manufactured millions of fake doses of antiviral medicine intended for bird flu. Many well-meaning intellectuals see Christianity as the cure of social ills. Let us pray for a genuine repentance of believers and seekers alike, and not merely a panacea for moral decay .

Thursday
The Chinese government wants to improve the safety of food stuffs. The most common problems are deceptive labeling, illegal additives, and under-stated weights. Nearly 50% of the products weigh less than claimed but 40% of rural customers still buy cheaper rather than quality goods. Occult and heretical teachings abound. Many believers have been deceived until it is too late and the church is destroyed. Let us remember those who have fallen victims to the Eastern Lightning cult.

Friday
In order to see a doctor, people are paying up to thirty times the official fee for scalpers who stand in line for registration. Without connections, seeing a doctor means a long, long wait in most hospitals and clinics. In many churches, getting there early rewards one the privilege to worship in the main sanctuary while late-comers must sit patiently in packed rooms watching closed-circuit TV. Let us remember all who worship in spirit and in truth in the Open churches .

Saturday
In urban areas "halal" Muslim restaurants have replaced the mosque as the social center of the Hui minority. While most of the Hui are in the Northwest, 800,000 Hui live in Henan, the province which claims the most Christians.Very little evangelistic effort is directed at Hui people and the government policy also restricts it. Let us pray for the opportunity and for Chinese believers to be willing to share the gospel with the Hui .

Sunday
In China, it is illegal to employ children under sixteen and companies involved in foreign trade usually avoid such practices. However, in poor families where the typical monthly income is about US$80, every child must earn his keep even though it means being treated unfairly. If they do not continue in school, working is the only option for children. Let us pray for the faith and health of all young believers who must work to supplement their family incomes .

Monday
115,000 Chinese students went overseas in 2004. The USA, England, and Germany are the leading destinations for all foreign students. One in ten persons in Germany is a foreign student. As Christmas draws near, host families will be inviting students to spend time with them. There will be church celebrations and winter retreats for Chinese students. Let us pray that many will come to know Jesus through these activities .

Prayer Request 11/22--11/28

Tuesday
Bush bicycled in Beijing, his second time since 1975, when he was a college student. He also attended a service and listened to a lady pastor preach “Love is tolerance, trust and perseverance” from the Book of Corinthians. Bush urged Chinese leaders to allow freedom of worship and the printing of the Bible. May the Lord grant a spiritual revival that is greater than the economic miracle witnessed in the past 30 years .

Wednesday
A nation-wide population sampling of one percent of the people in China is underway to get answers for nearly a hundred questions on income, education, marriage, health, and work. The government reassures people of confidentiality in this project. The government does not plan to ask about religion so again, there is no way to know how many Christians there are in China. Let us lift up daily all the believers. God knows each one of them .

Thursday
The Jitong railway, a 567-mile line in Inner Mongolia, is the last steam-powered railroad in the world but it will be replaced by new diesel trains this month. Since the re-opening of Mongolia, Christian churches there have witnessed exciting growth. Mongolian believers do not have the opportunity to search the Scriptures at a deeper level because of a lack of translated Christian materials there. Let us pray for the project of translating commentaries and training materials .

Friday
A heavy truck killed 21 students and teachers jogging on the roadside in Qinyaun, Shanxi where Mao repeatedly praised the people for their heroic efforts in resisting the Japanese in 1944. Churches in Shanxi need much prayer because of the shortage of faithful workers and more training for those who are working. Let us also pray for the opportunity for believers to witness and comfort the grieving families .

Saturday
Is there a sexual revolution in China? There are a reported 20,000 sex shops opened since 1993 and an estimated two million sex workers as well as the common practice of college women of giving themselves as prostitutes. Where is China headed? Some experts have called for the legalization of prostitution. Let us pray for the guarding of eyes and hearts of all believers .

Sunday
Which city do foreigners favor--Shanghai or Hong Kong? Shanghai offers many important advantages for those doing business in China, especially for those who are maneuvering through government regulations. Let us remember the many vibrant and active fellowship groups in Shanghai formed by foreign, Taiwanese and Hong Kong businessmen as well as Christian entrepreneurs who have returned from abroad .

Monday
Qiongyao, a long time Taiwan romance novelist, is ranked as the most influential and popular by college students. In all her fairytale-like love stories, love always triumphs despite all adversities. While the young atheistic intellectuals embrace romantic love, they don't know the great love of God. Let us pray for the writing and publishing of literature aimed at college students .

Prayer Request 11/15--11/21

Tuesday
English teaching is booming as a commercial enterprise. One Shanghai company has 800,000 students in 20 cities. English learning is not limited to students, but adults too. Teaching English can be a big money maker and a very effective way for personal evangelism. Let us remember all who are in China teaching English with the sole purpose of sharing the Gospel of Jesus .

Wednesday
Shenzhen, an economic miracle, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Among its population of twelve million people, eighty percent are laborers who have no legal residents and whose children have no educational privileges. Millions work long hours in factories with only one day off each week. Let us pray for the spiritual life of those who are believers but have not found fellowship and a place of worship .

Thursday
Leading Chinese thinkers assert that China today is at its worst state in all the years of its history. They recommend the revival of teachings of Confucius. More than five million children now study Confucian texts and recite ancient poetry. "Confucius for a confused China"? Let us pray for the opening of an opportunity to share the gospel and the preparation of believers for evangelism when that day comes .

Friday
People who are now in their forties in China had their lives hijacked by the Cultural Revolution. The studies of both high school and college students were aborted. Many of the residents of the cities were "sent down" to the countryside to work as peasants or were sent to reform camps. We take this time to remember those who suffered through the persecution, especially the tens of thousands who were forced to either denounce their faith publicly or face miserable persecution .

Saturday
Some Han Chinese have set up false residency in Qinghai Province to get into a good university and take advantage of the bonus points provides for educationally-disadvantaged provinces. Nearly a fourth of this sparsely populated providence (5.2 million) in Northeast China is Tibetan. Let us pray for the slow but steady work of building simple houses for the poor and distributing Tibetan Bibles here .

Sunday
Ten percent of the Chinese in China (130 million) are sixty years old or older. About 99.5% of these seniors do not engage in activities other than cooking, watching television, and caring for grandchildren. Seniors as a group are largely ignored in churches in China with few programs and little training specifically for them. We take this time to remember all those seniors who actively serve in every church .

Monday
Chinese merchants were the unintended victims of racial riots in a Paris suburb where there are thousands of Chinese stores and warehouses located near districts where radial tension is high. There are many Chinese churches in Paris serving hundreds of thousands of restaurant workers and merchants, many of whom are from Wenzhou. Let us pray for outreach work to Chinese students throughout France as well as to these restaurant workers and merchants.

Prayer Request 11/8--11/14

Tuesday
"Virtual Cohabitation" has become very popular with the white-collared working class and college students in China. This allows them to share a home complete with a pet and a marriage certificate. Is this generation heading the way of the people at the time of the Cultural Revolution touting the "One cup of water" philosophy (guilt-free intimacy) which was popular then? We need to pray much for this generation of Chinese .

Wednesday
11 provinces will begin to allow rural labors to be residents in their city (hukou system). This will give nearly eighty-seven million migrant workers legal residence in the city. Such a move will resolve legal issues regarding housing, labor, insurance, medical care, and education for children. It will also hasten the exodus of the rural population and potentially further weaken rural house churches. Let us pray for rural believers in cities to find a place of fellowships and worship .

Thursday
The pressure forced on them to study by the schools is the main cause of unhappiness for Chinese students. Half of the fourth graders worry about entrance exams for middle school. By sixth grade the number has increased to sixty-four percent. Christian parents tend to limit their children's activities in the churches fearing they will not have enough time to study. Let us pray for faith and trust in God for all the parents whose children will be taking entrance exams next year .

Friday
The leading cause of deaths among college students is suicide. Nearly 700 students attempt suicide daily. Inability of coping with setbacks and academic disappointments of the “One-child generation” and poor parenting skill (70% of families) are the reasons. Campus ministries cannot possibly reach every student, but let us pray that even some students will hear the good news of Jesus in the time of despair .

Saturday
Nearly half of urban, middle-income married Chinese men have extra-marital affairs. Among the divorced (both male and female) nearly two-thirds have committed adultery. A recent scientific survey confirmed this long-recognized trend. Let us pray for a guarding of the heart among the believers. Traveling alone is the biggest temptation and trap for itinerant church workers .

Sunday
All over China, internet police cracked down on the wide-spread "naked video conversation" and online porn which targets youth. People are encouraged to report to www.cyberpolice.cn Online porn and gambling as well as Christian content are closely monitored by Public Security. Let us pray for wisdom and discernment for the hundreds of thousands of employees of the cyber police division.

Monday
More than a third of China's 573,000 orphans do not receive any financial help or even basic medical care and education. Eighty-six percent of orphans live in rural areas. The "luckiest" ones are the tens of thousands who are adopted out overseas. Jesus said that what we do for the smallest of these we do for Him. Let us remember those Christians who strive to be foster parents and all the orphanages administered by Christian agencies .

Prayer Request

Tuesday
Xingjiang has become the hotspot for AIDS in China since eighty percent of the drug users there are infected. Chinese health experts who gathered in Chongqing said that the worst case scenario would be to have ten million people HIV-infected by 2010. In this area drug abusers and Muslim militants are a headache for the officials. Let us pray for the safety of believers, an outreach to Muslims and the vibrant ministry to college students .

Wednesday
A hundred and fifty thousand contestants participated in Super Girls, a singing contest based on “American Idols”. A dream of instant stardom fanned the phenomenal popularity of this TV program. Church choirs are mostly found in the Three-self churches and in Wenzhou. Let us remember all the church choirs as they lead the congregations in worship .

Thursday
Is the Chinese TV audience too gullible? Beijing television stations and advertisers have been thrown into disarray by a new ban on celebrity advertising which applies to endorsing of health foods, medicines, and cosmetics. Several large house church groups have suffered splits over their leadership in the past two or three years. Let us pray specifically for believers whose leaders are charismatic.

Friday
The People's Liberation Army will trim 200,000 from its ranks in the final three months of 2005. This massive army of 2.3 million is now half the size it was in 1985. China's newest and most urgent security threats are from the militant Islamic movement and the minority separatist movement in Xingjian. Let us pray for salvation of this huge army and the millions of veterans. Years of military indoctrination make them hard soil for the gospel message but the common sense of disappointment prepares them for the Message of the Savior .

Saturday
The Saipan islands in the Pacific Ocean used to be bustling centers for manufacturing clothing. They employed up to thirty thousand Chinese female laborers. However, since China joined the WTO, factories have faced stiff competition from China accompanied by economic uncertainty. Hundreds of workers came to know Jesus and received Bible training in Saipan and returned to their home villages. Let us pray for the mission work in there and the workers who have returned home to serve the Lord .

Sunday
A small village of 2075 population in Taishi, Guangdong is making big news. What started as four hundred villagers petitioning to remove the village head for embezzlement has turned into an ongoing “fight for democracy” as villagers clash with riot police. Villages that have corrupt officials are difficult places to live. Let us pray for believers and churches located in areas where officials are unfriendly to the Lord Jesus Christ .

Monday
The Suicide Hotlines in Beijing get over twenty thousand calls monthly but are able to respond to only fifteen percent of them. Suicide is common among the elderly, some of whom don't want to burden their children with their financial or health problems. Loneliness is the most common complaint even in this society which respects old age. Let us pray for those who show the love of Christ through nursing homes and health clinics .

Prayer Request 11/1--11/7

Tuesday

In this area drug abusers and Muslim militants are a headache for the officials. Let us pray for the safety of believers, an outreach to Muslims and the vibrant ministry to college students .

Wednesday
Why are the Korean TV dramas so popular in China? One common answer is that they are culturally close using traditional Confucian values set in contemporary urban settings. They extol filial love and present simple love stories with great sacrifices and dedication.

Sunday
After paying forty thousand yuan for “document fees”, many Chinese flocked to Malaysia to find work, only later to discover that the claims were false and there was no work to be had. Although the government has not sentenced them to the mandatory punishment for illegal workers, Chinese are being expelled.Let us pray for those churches that have expanded their ministries to the increasing number of Mandarin-speaking Chinese and their testimonies to their Muslim neighbors .

Monday
The Suicide Hotlines in Beijing get over twenty thousand calls monthly but are able to respond to only fifteen percent of them. Suicide is common among the elderly, some of whom don't want to burden their children with their financial or health problems.

Prayer Request 10/25--10/31

Tuesday
In a dramatic step, China lifts the personal income tax cutoff point from 800 to 1600 monthly. Many consider a monthly income of 1600 near-poverty, given the skyrocketing children’s education and health-care expenses. House churches face an acute shortage of workers because many abandoned their flocks or must keep a side-business to supplement income. Let us pray for the good stewardship of believers and those who continue their calling in faith.

Wednesday
Ba Jin, an influential writer, died at the age of 100. He was part of the young intelligentsia in the early 20th century that looked to Western philosophies — Marxism, anarchism, and liberalism — for solutions to China’s backwardness and social inequality. China churches desperately need a new generation of writers and thinkers who can address the unique needs in contemporary social and cultural context. Let us pray for all the younger generation involved in writing, theology, and church leadership.

Thursday
The little-known city of Zhaozhung boasts of an avenue which is twelve lanes wide--wider than Changan Boulevard in Beijing. Nearly a third of six hundred Chinese cities have planned to be world-class cities with airports, squares, subways, and convention centers. In the future it looks as if churches well be located in medium-sized cities. Let us pray for all the churches whether open or house churches and their training of their pastors.

Friday
Ninety-four percent of Beijing's outdoor medical advertisements are illegal. Exaggerated claims for the results of treatment and misrepresentation of hospital services are the most common violations. Chinese people love to take medicine and they never question a remedy which claims to cure all ailments. Let us pray for the alarming trend in many regions that the Gospel of Christ is preached to promise a better life without having to turn away from sins.

Saturday
In the past three years Korean television dramas have captured China. Youth idolize Korean stars and the media intensely follows each episode. The government is now considering controlling this Korean cultural invasion. Thousands of Koreans who are involved in church planting and community work are also making a great impact on Chinese churches. Let us give thanks for the fervent missionary spirit of the Korean churches and pray for the safety of every Korean worker inside China.

Sunday
A ring of criminals were sentenced to death for abducting nearly 61 children in Guizhou province. Children under 5 years were stolen and sold for huge profits. 36 children remained missing. As a whole, Guizhou remains economically disadvantaged and a very hard soil for the Gospel. Let us pray for the struggling churches and the training of pastors among the house churches here .

Monday
The venerable CCTV (China Central Television) is losing many of its highly visible program presenters, personalities recognized in ordinary households and adored by billions. They quote low pay, high pressure, and restrictive employment arrangement as the reasons. The Chinese church faces the same loss of its leaders. We ask your prayers for the guarding of hearts and protection from the evil one .

Prayer Request 10/18--10/24

Tuesday
“China 2, Japan 0”, China proudly announces in reference to the successful landing of the manned space flight, Shenzhou 6. In a nation where Japanese electronic goods are considered superior, much national pride rides on this technological achievement. Japan is one of the least evangelized countries, a hard soil for the Gospel. Let us pray for the divine lifting of nationalist rivalry and even sending missionaries to Japan from the Chinese churches .

Wednesday
Once divorce was looked upon as a dreaded fate by the women in China. Today many younger urban women feel divorce is their civil right and thus, the divorce rate is rising. In Guangdong province women initiate seventy percent of the divorces. One of the common reasons for this is extra-marital affairs. Let us remember all the couples, especially those whose marriage is affected by separation by work or the heavy demand of church work .

Thursday
Marrying a foreigner is the dream of many Chinese women, especially middle-aged divorced women. They think, "This is the only ticket I have for a better life my child and me." In Shanghai three percent of all the registrations are for marriage to a foreigner. However, inter-racial marriage may not be so romantic with divorces in such marriages hovering at about fifty percent. Let us pray for many of these women to come to know Jesus in churches which embrace them and their white husbands .

Friday
The One-child Policy has had the effect of a double-edged sword. Girls have benefited with better education and inheritance rights, but it has led to abortion and abandonment of infant girls. The suicide rate of Chinese women is the highest in the world--five time the average in other countries with victims being typically village women 15-45 years old. We pray that believers and churches will be able to share the love of Christ with the families of victims .

Saturday
Among the top twenty most influential women in Shanghai in 1995-2005 seven were business women, seven were in the education/art and entertainment field, and two were volunteers. The women in Shanghai are known for their determination and powerful influence in their families. We take this time to pray for all women involved in teaching and shepherding. The percentage of women in ministry in China is undoubtedly the highest in the world .

Sunday
The news carried a story of a million-dollar wedding held in the tallest restaurant in Shanghai. Weddings, once austere ceremonies with a local Party chief as the official, today have given way to the trendy extravagant wedding. In the villages a wedding frequently doubles as an evangelistic meeting. Let us pray for the many believers who share their faith openly to their friends and relatives .

Monday
"Match-making Mini Conventions" held in the open air in several cities are well-attended by eager parents who exchange information and pictures of their children. The first group of "emperors" and "empresses" reared under the One Child Policy are now ready for marriage. We pray for those Christian young men and women who are now of a marriageable age. May they seek to know God's desire and design for their marriages as well as purity in courtships .

Prayer Request 10/11--10/17

Tuesday
“Quotations from Chairman Mao Zedong”, better know as The Little Red Book in the West, has became a popular book in Taiwan. It was once studied daily and memorized by everyone in China during 1960. Availability of Bible is no longer an issue. However, the reading ability and the nearly-century old translation (Union Version) present great difficulty for many believers. Let us pray for the reading, understanding and applying the Word of God, especially among the rural and less-educated .

Wednesday
What kind of entertainment interest the Beijing youth (12-24)? Internet 40%, sports 20%, television 10. Of those surveyed, 30% spent 10-20 hours weekly online, 40% spent less than 10 hours weekly. Internet has certainly become the media of choice for the young people. There are practically no online Christian content and resources targeting the Chinese youth. Let us remember the effort of churches to reach the college and younger groups .

Thursday
Communist Youth League claims a membership of 70 millions. The theme for this year is “Dedicating the youthfulness to the nation” It is said that 7 millions retired Party members are actively involved in recruiting the youth to the Party.Communist Party recognizes its future lies in the youth. Chinese churches have not yet awakened to this. Let us pray for all the youth in the church, for their spiritual growth. And, also for those whose parents are believers, but do not attend church .

Friday
Within 20 years, foreign fast foods have successfully change the diet of urban youth, munching French fries and sipping cola is so common now. 43% of primary school kids said they like “foreign fast food”, according to a new survey. Chinese churches have not changes its programs or worship format to attract the newer generation. There are a lot more youth in churches in Wenzhou and cities in Fujian. Let us remember the youth ministries here .

Saturday
In the next five years (2006-2010) China will add twenty-seven million people above the age of sixty--from 147 to 173 million. Since sixty-three percent of Chinese men smoke, lung cancer will be one of the leading causes of death in these people. Church congregations are rapidly aging and this trend will definitely continue. Let us pray for vitality, special care, and ministry, such as audio Bibles and larger print books for the older saints.

Sunday
Government has tried unsuccessfully to clamp down the outright abuses at various levels of education. Recent uproar focused on the widespread unauthorized fee collected for English competency testing among the colleges. Parents cannot really question the legitimacy of all kinds of educational fees. For the spiritual education, church has little resource to improve its Sunday School. Let us pray for an investment on curriculum and teacher training .

Monday
China Communist Youth League developed an online game "Anti-Japan War Online". The game will younger players, to learn from history. They will get a patriotic feeling when fighting Japanese invaders to safeguard their motherland. Government wants to revive the anti-Japanese sentiment among the generation who knew little of the WWII. Young Christians today know little of the painful past of the Chinese past either. Let us pray for a new generation who will love the Lord, more than the past .

Prayer Request 10/4--10/10

Tuesday
Five years after it infiltrated China's historic Forbidden City, Starbucks has opened a shop at the Great Wall. With prices about the same as its American counterparts, going there is considered a status symbol, especially among young professionals.Translated American books are the majority of Christian titled published in China. Chinese believers in comparison have very little to read. Let us pray for more culturally relevant Christian books and other literature .

Wednesday
The city of Beijing will eliminate tenure for all professors and teachers employed in the municipal system and replace them by a comprehensive performance-based contract system. Teaching has been thought of as the last "secure job". We should take time to remember all the professors who teach in all the seminaries and Bible schools. Let us pray for their diligent teaching of the inerrant World of God with an emphasis on personal spiritual formation .

Thursday
With a life expectancy of nearly eighty years, residents of Beijing enjoy the longest lives of any people in all of China. The government attributes this to the presence of more doctors, 3811 designated centers for exercise plus many activities for seniors there. The majority of Chinese senior citizens live with their families. Let us pray for all the churches who have special ministries reaching out to the homebound. A great need is for audio Bibles and devotional recordings for those who are not able to read well .

Friday
Road construction has become ubiquitous throughout the China's West. The Erlanshan tunnel, on the Chengdu-Tibet road, is celebrated as a Chinese engineering marvel as great as the Three Gorges Dam. (The) Dali Lama said easy transportation to Tibet could lead to "cultural genocide", the destruction of its cultural preservation. Let us pray for the slow, often difficult but steady work of evangelism in Buddhist Tibet .

Saturday
In Chinese cities more than seventy percent of teachers are women but in rural regions only forty-two percent are women. Being a female teacher carries much stress and burden, such as becoming a parent to the students raised by grandparents.Rural church workers are mostly female. Shepherding multi-generations flocks with little support is common. Let us pray for strength, comfort and helpers for all female church workers in the rural and remote regions .

Sunday
By the end of this decade, China will have twenty-three million more marriageable young men than women. Experts call this the "Marriage Squeeze" saying it will have a serious political and social impact the same as crime, HIV, and sexually transmitted diseases. More and more Christian young women must choose between marrying a non-believer or not being able to marry at all. Family pressure compounds the situation. Let us remember the young women in all the churches that they will be faithful and serve the Lord .

Monday
Even to Chinese from other parts of China, Shanghai is like a foreign city. Shanghainese, the local dialect is nearly unintelligible to untrained ears so the government has decided to enforce the use of Putonghua (official Mandarin Chinese) in all public communication including TV, radio, and schools. While many churches in Shanghai have been formed specifically for those seeking work there from the surrounding provinces, the city has proved to be a place where the local citizens are hardened toward the gospel. Let us pray for spiritual revival in this huge city and growing evangelism among the migrant workers .

Prayer Request 9/27--10/3

Tuesday
During the past two years 1,379 college graduates have gone west to Xingjian, a region where many of the Chinese Muslim minorities live, to work as volunteer teachers and helpers in community development. This year 818 others will join them. In this area ministry on university campuses is booming. Many who go there to teach English bear good spiritual fruit. Let us remember the work there, especially that among the Muslims .

Wednesday
"Military training" is a requirement for all new high school students both male and female. While many parents are weary of this physically demanding training, it is the best time for the Party to recruit new members. More than a thousand students will enter twenty seminaries this month. "Political Doctrine" will be a part of their curriculum. Let us pray for spiritual revival for all of the seminary teachers and students in China .

Thursday
The mandatory retirement age for men is sixty but for women it is five years earlier. Should women be forced to retire at the age of fifty-five? Several lawsuits are being watched closely as women demand a higher retirement age. Many women retire to care for their grandchildren, start a small business, or play the stock market. Chinese churches have yet to involve many men and women who are 50-65 years old and available to serve in the church. Let us pray for this group of ready workers and their Bible training .

Friday
In the last three years Beijing has added nearly one million mingong (migrant laborers--nearly ten percent of the people living there) to its population. Seventy-seven percent of them come from neighboring provinces, have worked on the 2008 Olympic construction projects, and are fifteen to thirty-five years old. The city faces a potential crisis when this construction phase finishes and is followed by mass unemployment. Let us pray for the efforts of the Beijing churches to reach out to this group of migrant workers .

Saturday
Experts say that seventy percent of Chinese parents lack adequate parenting skills. Overprotective parents lead to a generation of young people who have bad temperaments and are unable to tolerate setbacks. Such a deficit is already reflected in the high teen suicide rate in China. There are neither religious teachings nor campaigns to condemn or prevent suicides and suicide crisis services are available only in Beijing, Fujian, and Anhui. Let us pray for a loud voice from the church to answer this crisis which has risen to epidemic proportions .

Sunday
About seventy to eighty percent of divorces in China are caused by an extra-marital affair. The Women's Federation recommends a reasonable and rational approach by using a trial separation and broader social acceptance of this reality(extra-marital affair damaging marriages). Believers face the same pitfalls and sins in their marriages. Let us pray for divine protection, badly needed marital counseling, and strong teaching from the pulpits .

Monday
Government admits the gap between the rich and the poor is approaching a dangerous level. Average urban income is $1,000 a year, while countryside still averages $300. Simmering discontent of the poor has provoked protest and violent labor clashes recently. Chinese believers fall in between these two extremes as well. Let us remember the poor and needy believers, their unfaltering faith in Christ and how urban churches can assist .

Prayer Request 9/20--9/26

Tuesday
Hong Kong Disneyland opened to huge crowds from all over Asia. Hong Kong government owns 57% of this venture, and expects 1/3 of its visitors (5.6 million first year alone) coming from China. Shanghai Disneyland is scheduled to open in 2012. Tourists from Mainland China are flooding to Hong Kong and Taiwan, creating a huge opportunity for innovative personal and public sharing of Gospel. Let us pray for vision of evangelism among churches on both islands .

Wednesday
70% of singles older than 35 years old are female in Guangdong. Most marriage introductory agencies consider their female clients older than 38 years “unmarriageable”. Older than 35 is an obstacle in seeking a job in China, being 38 is even worse for single woman. Let us pray for all the single believers, may they find true fulfillment in their walk with the Lord, and contentment in the face of social pressure .

Thursday
A pan-Asian survey reveals that 80% of Chinese women use cosmetics routinely, and nearly half consider themselves overweigh. For Chinese, 70% consider themselves most beautiful before 30 years old. The average age of female Chinese believers is probably 40-50 years old, and definitely older among the rural churches. Let us remember all the women in the role of teaching, preaching and leading the congregations, no matter of their ages .

Friday
Each family of the 123 victims in a flooded coal mine in China's Guangdong last month will be paid 200,000 yuan (25,000 USD) for compensation. The compensation is the highest for industrial-related death. “How much is a life worth?” Such a question may sound insensitive, but tens of thousands of poor church workers passed away and leave nothing for their families. Pray for God’s provision for the descendents of righteous .

Saturday
Beijing University caught in discrimination controversy. Nearly 80% of its Foreign Language School is female and the school wants to lower the ratio by admitting lesser qualified male students. Another year of school means new faces in all the campus Bible study groups, many more women as well. Let us pray not only for new converts and even young men and women who will dedicate themselves to the Lord for full time ministry .

Sunday
20% of sexually-transmitted disease cases are in Guangdong province. The incidence of HIV infection has also increased 10 folds, now 1.3% of the population. Admittedly, sex-trades is rampant not only in the large cities, but along the highway stops. Guangdong is a place of temptation for all believers. Let us pray for divine protection and guarding of hearts for all who lives, works and station there .

Monday
Chinese language can be very different in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. There are many unique phrases, terms and expressions, which confound and puzzling even Chinese. In order to translate Christian books and articles, at least 3 versions are needed to ensure “comfort level” of the intended readers. Let us pray for all the printing and publishing of Christian titles, teaching materials which must overcome some of these unique problems .

Prayer Request 9/13-9/19

Tuesday
China donated 5 million USD to the Hurricane Katrina relief. Taiwan’s Buddhist Tzu Chi donated 4 million USD and sent volunteers to the nearby cities for relief assistance. Acts of compassion of Chinese churches often lack coordination and media exposure. Let us pray for the changing of mindset of believers and churches alike, to love not only within the church, but also to the community .

Wednesday
The story of three teenagers beating an innocent beggar to death in daylight shocked the nation. Violent crimes and gang activities, once unheard of, are now common and beggars, the truly needy ones, are indistinguishable from those who go begging just to make money. Historically Chinese churches focus inwardly on spirituality and shy away from social issues. Let us pray for compassion and the spirit of light and salt among all believers .

Thursday
China has launched a new version of its currency. The largest bill is still 100 yuan (about 12 USD) but new printing technologies are incorporated into it to combat the rampant circulation of fake bills. In most churches, the offering is low so many churches are not self-supporting. One reason for this is the lack of teaching on the blessing of giving. Let us pray for cheerful giving in faith in an all-sufficient God among the believers .

Friday
Affluent schools have modern facilities and computers. Parents complain that schools discriminate against the poor students by giving them textbooks in black and white instead of in color and making them wear uniforms of colors different from the others. The gap between the rich and poor churches shows up in Sunday school. Let us pray for all the children who attend churches with few resources but that have teachers willing to tell the Bible stories .

Saturday
Women compose twenty percent of the parliament in China. One-fifth of the members of the Communist Party (13 million) are women. More than half of the workers in rural churches are women and many women pastors lead the Three-self Churches. We take this time to praise and thank the Lord for all the women shepherds. Let us pray for them and their families that they will faithfully walk with the Lord tenderly caring for the flock and faithfully teaching the Word.

Sunday
In China there are 685 deaths from suicide daily which translates to 250,000 deaths yearly. Suicide remains the fifth leading cause of death in China but it is the number one cause of death among those aged 15-34 years. China accounts for one-fifth of the population of the world but one-fourth of all deaths from suicide. What can churches and Christians do about this epidemic? Will any of them ever hear about Jesus ?

Monday
Do you need a "professional crier" for a funeral? Students from the music school will cry convincingly for 500 yuan an hour. Once strictly discouraged by the Party, funeral services have now become ridiculously elaborate. Families are pressured to give their loved ones a "proper" burial which is really a matter of "mienzi" (face). Let us remember all the funerals conducted in the Christian tradition that they will be used as an opportunity for evangelism for the livings .

Prayer Request 9/6--9/12

Tuesday
Pastor Allen Yuan, a beloved house church leader, recently died at age ninety-two. He endured twenty-two years of labor camp but since his release has baptized hundreds of people yearly. His funeral was attended by thousands in Beijing as thousand more were turned away. Pastor Yuan asked, "Pray first for the lost millions of China. Secondly pray for the newcomers and new believers. Thirdly please pray for the leaders of our country ."

Wednesday
China is now saying it will enforce its laws to protect the equality of women, that sexual harassment will not be tolerated. They plan to add more laws and use mass education to bring this about. Companies will no longer be able to dismiss women who are pregnant or have just had babies.Unfortunately sexual harassment is found in many churches. Let us pray for many of our sisters who are victims of these unspeakable transgressions but remain silent about it

Thursday
Mao declared, "Women hold up half of the sky", but today one in five women above the age of fifteen in the villages is illiterate. The suicide rate among women in the rural regions of China is the highest in the world. Jesus praised the devotion Mary showered on Him. We remember all the women believers, particularly those who are not able to read the Scriptures for themselves but still are deeply hungry for the Bread of Life .

Friday
Twelve percent of the buyers of luxury goods in the world are Chinese. Tourists from China make up ten percent of high-end tourist buyers spending 980 USD per trip which is the highest in the world. Does the Chinese church still need assistance from the outside? Can China send out her own missionaries soon? Let us pray the day will quickly come when there are missionaries from China all over the world .

Saturday
Only one-third of the original Great Wall of China is preserved. The other two-thirds is either badly damaged or missing. Poor farmers have stolen bricks from the ancient structure to build their homes. The government is appealing for foreign donors to continue the restoration. The Wall was built to keep the nomads from invading the Middle Kingdom. Let us pray for a breaking down of the Great Wall in the hearts of the millions of Chinese who have been exposed to the gospel but still refuse Jesus .

Sunday
Is the China Beauty Pageant a crazy idea? Once banned but started again a few years ago, China now hosts more beauty contests than any other country. To compete for attention and revenue, many of these so-called beauty pageants have merely become bikini contests. The talents and gifts of Chinese women believers are often overlooked with the exception of a few composers and musicians. Let us pray for Christian writers, theologians, and writers of stories for children .

Monday
Low prices and a strong demand have created a boom in the trafficking of baby girls for adoption. Eighty percent of the babies rescued are now girls. A girl costs only 5000 to 8000 yuan (900USD) while a boy can cost three times that much. There is still tremendous pressure to have baby boys in Chinese families, especially with the one-child policy. We call you to pray especially against the pressure pregnant believers go through when they know they will be having a girl .
