Prayer Request 4/30 - 5/6

Tuesday
The earthquake in Lushan, Sichuan laid bare the extent of damage to the reputation of the Red Cross Society of China. After it announced the disaster relief fundraising, people openly scoff and ridicule its effort and advise against giving to the Red Cross. Many Chinese Christians have the similar mistrust about giving to the church, because the vast majority of churches do not publish its financial book. We want to pray for an improvement to churches administration and financial accountability, and more church leaders willing to share these details with members.
Wednesday
China’s Red Cross became a pariah in the eyes of many Chinese after a huge scandal two years ago that centered on Guo Meimei. Although it has tried to change the public perception by instituting public oversight, but public trust will be difficult to recover in short term. Unfortunately, Chinese believers have also grown distrustful of any fundraising in church, especially with church building or mission. We want to pray for all the churches trying to purchase meeting places this year, for the unity of church and the growth of their ministries.
Thursday
For much of its existence, Chinese Red Cross ran like a semi-official entity fraught with corruption, lacking transparency and accountability. After the earthquake, many people are donating instead to a new public charity, started by action movie star, Jet Li. Many churches and mission organization will be collecting donation within China and from abroad earmarked for earthquake relief. We pray for wise use of all the money, not only it will help the truly needy, but also provide an opportunity to share the Gospel and build up churches in the disaster area.
Friday
The vast majority of Christians in China are in the following provinces: Henan, Anhui, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Fujian. We pray for the Lord's grace for churches in these provinces and that the Lord will use them to be a true blessing to all the churches in China. We ask God to cause believers to grow in knowledge of His word and in maturity so they will be truly Christian and not in name only.
Saturday
Nearly thirty years ago the churches in rural China experienced a great revival. Believers were very fervent in sharing their own testimonies and telling of God's miraculous acts. Rural churches grew fast in the ensuing decade. We pray for another revival in rural churches so they will see not merely their own poverty, weakness, and deficiency. May the Lord give them the passion to share the gospel and be on fire for Him once again. We pray that the Holy Spirit will do great things in the hearts of believers today so they will love the Lord more fervently.
Sunday
Hosting a wedding dinner costs a great deal of money but a cheap banquet is guaranteed to hurt the reputation of a family. It is a difficult decision to make. Guests expect a lavish dinner worthy of their gifts while hosts expect to get enough red envelopes to guarantee a profit. As a result both the cost of a dinner and the standard rate for a cash gift continue to spiral. We pray that all Christian couples married in churches will have a great love for the Lord accompanied by a strong desire to serve Him. We pray, too, that those who have married non-believers will have such a good testimony that their spouses will be willing to turn to God and serve Him.
Monday
Being a part of the clan or the community is more important in small cities and the countryside than it is in the cities where people have few dealings with anyone other than their own acquaintances. One missed social occasion has the potential to put an end to relations between two families in the rural setting. Many believers fail to attract their friends and relatives to go with them to church because of their poor personalities, their reputation, or their lack of love. It is our prayer that all believers will have powerful testimonies and will be filled with the sweet fragrance of the Lord Jesus.

Prayer Request 4/23 - 4/29

Tuesday
A powerful earthquake jolted China's Sichuan province near the same area where a devastating quake struck five years ago. Casualty toll could climb. This is also the home to China's famous pandas. Let us pray for rescue efforts not only for the residents but also for the tourists in the affected area. Chinese Christians responded to the disaster relief last time and became a powerful testimony of the love of Jesus to the nation. We pray that churches will do the same again.
Wednesday
Years ago, the whole of China applauded 9/11 as a punishment to the United States. After the Boston bombing, far from inflaming the deep antipathy that many Chinese feel for U.S. foreign policy, there was a widespread outpouring of empathy instead. Chinese believers share the tendency of judging others very quickly and relentlessly. Let us pray the Lord will convict us all of our pride and self-righteousness, and fill us with humility and thanksgiving for His mercy and grace.
Thursday
In the past, Chinese people who studied abroad and then returned to China were regarded as very lucky. They were called "the returnees" and were guaranteed the best jobs with bright prospects of getting rich. We praise God because many of them came to know Jesus while they were abroad. It is estimated that ten percent of these "returnees" became Christians. We want to pray that they will continue to walk with Jesus and also for the many churches they have started.
Friday
Times have changed and now many Chinese students who have studied abroad go home with no prospect of a job at all. They are euphemistically called "the seaweeds"--washed ashore on the beach and useless. Let us pray for those who have returned to China but are unable to find a good job, especially those who have accepted Christ while they were abroad. May they always trust the Lord and find strength and comfort from above.
Saturday
Returnees with their foreign education are not so well accepted now in China as they used to be since those who have graduated in their motherland have a better grasp of English than before and they command smaller salaries. The returnees are known for their cantankerous attitudes and they do not fit well in the Chinese corporate culture. Let us pray specifically for those Christian graduates who have returned to China and are seeking for jobs. We know they have an adjustment to make and we pray for their spiritual adjustment, too, that they will find a church where they can fit in and have fellowship in Christ.
Sunday
Employers in China are not very warm to new returning graduates. Bosses in China want obedient employees who do not challenge their ideas and do not demand high salaries. We want to pray for powerful testimonies and cultural sensitivity for the Christians who reach out to share Jesus with students from China. May the love of Christ shine through their lives and draw their Chinese friends to the Lord.
Monday
Scholars have observed that as China's standard of living improves but the disparity between the rich and the poor widens, people are more open to religion and there is a greater demand for satisfaction of spiritual needs. We know affluence tends to make lukewarm Christians and we have observed the decline in church attendance that comes with it. We pray for revival of all of the churches in China--those that have a burden for others who are marginalized by society and the impoverished rural churches.

Prayer Request 4/16 - 4/22

TuesdayA 14 year old Chinese teen became the youngest competitor in the prestigious world golf tournament. Last month, a 12 year old Chinese boy became the first golfer to qualify in an European Tour event. China is putting lots of resources, energy and money into golf. It is very sad that there are very few teenagers in China churches. We need to pray for believer parents of teens. They need to encourage their children to live out their faith and churches must do everything possible to retain young people before they are lost.
Wednesday
China's new first lady has impressed and burnished China's image by accompanying her husband overseas. She is a popular sopranist famous for her soaring, glass-breaking voice as well as her patriotic folk songs, especially during the Chinese New Year's televised galas. Let us remember the wives of Chinese pastors in our prayers. They usually perform many duties for the churches with little recognition of their service. We ask for God's blessing for their families and an extra measure of strength to serve as a great helper and assistant to their husbands.
Thursday
Like the current Mrs. Peng, Madame Chiang (Soong Mei-ling) added a touch of beauty and grace to a regime sorely in need of both in those days. She made an impression on everyone who met her and Life magazine dubbed her "the most powerful woman in the world. The wives of Chinese pastors are the obvious choice for all the counseling in their churches. Since women are in a majority in churches in China, pastors' wives have great expectations laid on them. We pray for the spiritual and emotional support provided by the wives of the pastors and their ministry to women.
Friday
Like Peng Li-yuan, Jiang Qing, the wife of Mao Zedong rose to prominence first as a singer and actress. Unlike Mrs. Peng, Madame Mao was universally feared and reviled. Female preachers often play an important role in evangelism, church planting, and the training of new preachers. We ask the Lord for wisdom, physical and emotional strength, and endurance for each and every one of them.
Saturday
In contrast to Jiang Qing, the first ladies in China during the 1980's and 1990's kept a low public profile. As China looks for new ways to boost its soft power abroad, Peng Li-yuan could well follow in Madame Soong's footsteps. Many Chinese are happy to know that "We Chinese have a real first lady." Churches in China seem to run on the idea of "Buy one, get one free" as they demand that the wife of the pastors also serves full time. Let us pray for all the families of the pastors who are stressed out, discouraged, and even feel battered. We ask the Lord to comfort them, refresh and revive them, and that their churches will honor, cherish, and treasure them.
Sunday
The reluctance to give wives a prominent place in national politics has deep roots. Chinese history is littered with cautionary tales of women who were allowed to come too close to the center of power. Many house churches are led by an elder or a family. These are very dedicated people and they also assume the financial needs of the churches. We want to pray that the Lord will use these husband and wife teams who lead the churches as models of dedication, godly marriage, and serving together.
Monday
Many Chinese hope their new first lady will break from tradition and become a focus and inspiration for the nation. When the first lady is beautiful and personable, it makes people feel their government is humane rather than bureaucratic. We know how important the wives of the church leaders are so let us pray for their marriages and their commitment to their children. May the Lord protect their families from temptations, attacks of the evil one, and comfort them when they are discouraged.

Prayer Request 4/9 - 4/15

Tuesday
Under China's hukou (residence registration) system, millions of migrant workers are not recognized as being residents of cities and do not qualify for cheaper health care at government hospitals, nor can they go back to their hometowns to take advantage of the subsidized medical care there due to the long distance they would have to travel. Let us pray for believers who have health issues, that God would heal them and then He could receive glory for it. We remember those who are poor and sick and ask that they would not lose faith in God but would experience His presence in their difficult time.
Wednesday
Millions of migrant workers provide labor for China’s economic boom but when they are sick, they are forced into the seedy and unregulated world of the back alley “black clinics”. Migrant workers are the main patrons of these places due to flaws in the health insurance system. Let us pray for all Christian medical professionals since they are the ones who provide advice and help for ill people in the churches. We ask the Lord to give them love and strength so they can uplift those who are weak spiritually.
Thursday
According to government statistics, since 2010, the Beijing government has shut down about a thousand “black clinics” a year. However, many reopen nearby or in the same place only days after they are closed. There are many believers who are ill and cannot afford the medical care they need. Many who have terminal illnesses stay home to die. We pray for their churches that they would reach out to help these believers who are in great need.
Friday
Migrant workers know about the substandard facilities and lack of care in the “black clinics” but they are forced to go there for medical care. A visit for a common cold can cost eight hundred yuan (a quarter of their monthly salary) at a government hospital in Beijing. Believers who are poor resort to borrowing money to get good medical care for their parents. There is a Chinese proverb which says, “Parents with prolonged illness lose filial sons”. Let us pray for kindness and patience for believers.
Saturday
The hukou system which dates back to 1958 has split China’s 1.3 billion people along urban-rural lines and has prevented roughly 800 million people who are registered as rural residents from settling in cities and enjoying basic urban welfare and medical services. Many believers who are registered in their home village are now working in cities and they need our prayers because many of them have stopped attending church. May the Lord revive them and guide them back to worship and fellowship with other believers.
Sunday
Health insurance works locally but when people go to other places to work, not all of those places provide health insurance and even that is very difficult to obtain. It could take months and then still not come through. For those who are insured, reimbursement comes only after they pay themselves and it is often complicated by bureaucratic red tape which puts the families at risk of bankruptcy when major health problems strike. Pastors and church workers in the house churches are unable to get the health insurance the government offers because churches are not considered legal employers. Let us keep pastors and their families in our prayers, for their health and also that their churches will be able to provide the necessary insurance coverage.
Monday
It is common for Chinese church workers to teach the Bible and caring for the flock daily. Sometimes they err in their Bible teaching unintentionally but are not aware of it. The lack of supply of spiritual books stifle their spiritual growth and affect the long-term development of the church. We pray for pastors who lack spiritual resources, books or opportunities for renewal. May the Lord equip them and renew them.

Prayer Request 4/2 - 4/8

Tuesday
Hong Kong implemented a restriction on the export of baby formula so that an adult traveler can take only two cans of it out of Hong Kong. Many people who live in mainland China buy baby formula abroad and avoid the domestic formula because they are afraid it might be inferior or harmful. Let us pray for families of believers who have infants or toddlers. Many of them have the grandparents raising the little ones while the couples work. We pray that the little ones will receive spiritual nourishment and blessing from their parents and the parents will also continue to mature in Christ.
Wednesday
According to a state-run newspaper, at least thirteen million abortions are performed each year in China, about 25 cases every minute. Abortion is done mostly by single women. The actual number, however, is believed to be even higher since this figure includes only those terminations done in hospitals. Many women in the churches have undergone abortions for various reasons. The churches in China are unusually silent on the issue of abortion. Even in the churches some people feel abortion cannot be avoided so let us pray that Christians will be able to offer counseling or support for those who choose to abort.
Thursday
The thirteen million yearly abortions reported by the Chinese government includes only those done in regular hospitals and it does not show unreported abortions or those induced by the ten million abortion pills sold in China each year. Let us remember in our prayers those young couple who are facing the decision of whether or not to end an unwanted pregnancy. We ask the Lord to give them clear direction about what to do, especially those who know the will of God but have not lived accordingly.
Friday
The high rate of abortion in China has been attributed to the one-child policy but young unmarried women under twenty-five years of age are the biggest group of those having abortions (about six million cases yearly or about half of the total cases). These young women are not under the jurisdiction of the one-child policy. Premarital sex is quite prevalent and happens a lot even among church-going young people. We pray for those who have become pregnant and are considering abortion that they will experience the forgiveness and unconditional love of Jesus Christ and grow closer to God.
Saturday
In the 1970’s China imposed strict laws about birth control limiting couples to just one child through the use of sterilization and various contraceptive devices. If a married woman has more than one child, the family faces a fine and the risk of job loss. Let us pray for Christian families who struggle with the scar, the guilt, and the regret of abortion. We ask the Lord to comfort them and give them fresh hope and joy. May their marriages be renewed and grow even stronger than in the past knowing the Lord has forgiven them and will bless them.
Sunday
Every year twenty million children are born in China but the annual number of abortions is thirteen million. This makes China the leading country in the world in terms of the number of abortions performed yearly. These statistics reflect the sad general view of life in China. It is very difficult for Chinese churches to speak on the sanctity of life because abortion is so prevalent and accepted as the norm. We ask the Lord to lay the burden on the hearts of more pastors to speak up about this, to help people realize that we are made in God’s image, and that each life is precious to Him whether it is an unborn fetus or a deformed child or adult.
Monday
There are many churches worldwide and especially in the Guangdong region that speak Cantonese. People in Guangdong were especially blessed to be the earliest Chinese believers of the Gospel. But, fluency in Mandarin is a must to share Gospel in the rest of China. We give thanks to God for all the Cantonese-speaking churches and the mission works they support and the missionaries they sent out. We pray for the continuing growth for them and the training ministries they lead inside China.
