Prayer Request 1/26 - 2/1

Tuesday
The government of China is planning to put into effect a law forbidding people who buy things for the government to be related by blood or marriage to the suppliers of such things. China is trying to combat the perception of corruption at all levels of the government because of the news that there have been officials arrested for accepting bribery or kickbacks。 Corruption will definitely not go away with more rules or laws. We pray for that people's hearts will be changed by turning to Christ. Many Chinese house churches give the impression that they are "family-run" or controlled by a few people and hence lack transparency and true accountability. We pray specifically for this kind of congregation, too.

Wednesday
Beginning in the summer of 2010, Chinese laborers who have medical insurance can use that coverage when they are working in other provinces. There is a large "floating" population of rural residents who have left home to work in cities. This policy will certainly encourage more shifting in the population but it will provide much-needed benefits to the laborers. Will more people go to cities to get more money and easier lives? How will this affect the already shrinking rural church ministries? Let us pray for strength, a powerful sharing of God's Word, and a joyful spirit for every one who serves in a rural church despite the fact that their members are older, poorer, and "helpless".

Thursday
A recent online survey of 360,000 people revealed that eighty percent believe that "happiness is owning a home". For young couples, buying an apartment is a "six-people effort" which involves not only the couple working full time but includes the savings of their parents on both sides. Parents must save not only for their own retirement but are expected to contribute to their child's down payment on his apartment. We pray for all believers whose children are still at the age that they are buying a home. We pray for enormous faith in God, not only in using their savings but also that their children will find a spiritual home and attend church as their parents do.

Friday
Recently China has been flexing her muscles and playing the role of the "tough guy" in the international arena from internet censorship to human rights issues. Some have said that this began at the time of the Beijing Olympics. Then the global financial crisis which left China relatively unscathed further bolstered her confidence. In churches we often find pride and rivalry. May we all imitate the humility of our Master and practice, not merely preach servant hood. We pray that Chinese believers will have boldness and courage in sharing Jesus with their kinsmen.

Saturday
The news frequently carries articles about the arrest of super-rich people in China and the average citizen there often wonders whether rich businessmen are always linked with corrupted officials. It is interesting that such cynical speculations abound in internet postings but are never filtered out by the highly scrutinized Chinese internet policies. Chinese churches have long had the mentality that to be spiritual one must be poor. They feel church workers? should be impoverished in order to depend on God and be effective in their ministry. Let us pray against this incorrect attitude and their using it as an excuse not to take care of God's servants. We pray for more correct and Biblical teaching about stewardship and offerings.

Sunday
College students who are couples and live off campus are no longer considered unusual. Many are "cohabiting" and sharing intimately online, living in a virtual home, not bound by any moral rules, and even having multiple partners at the same time. A sense of loneliness is very prevalent among today's young people. Many have left home to live and study elsewhere during high school. Once in college, they feel free to do whatever they want to do. Let us pray for every one who is involved in campus ministries. May their fruit be abundant and their discipleship of students effective.

Monday
Guangzhou is a city 2210 years old and it has always been a key city in Southern China. It ranks behind only Shanghai and Beijing (surpassed Tianjin) in terms of domestic production. Historically many have gone abroad to work from Guangzhou which has made it a port for both trading and cultural exchange. Although Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua) is now the predominant language among overseas Chinese churches, Cantonese (dialect of Guangzhou) is still widely used there as well as in Hong Kong. An interesting fact is that these Cantonese churches tend to send out more missionaries than their Mandarin-speaking counterparts. Let us pray for all the Cantonese-speaking churches and their ministries.

Prayer Request 1/19 - 1/25

Tuesday
Chinese troops have been part of the United Nations team in Haiti and when the earthquake devastated the island nation, China quickly sent a crew to help. Recently, Haiti has been a key stopover point for Chinese who are illegally entering America and hundreds of them are still among all of the missing victims of the earthquake. Chinese people know the pain a massive earthquake brings. They are proud of themselves and how quickly they rebuilt after the Sichuan earthquake. They also tend to look down on those who they refer to as "lazy and poor". May the Lord give us and them humility and take away the pride of superiority. Let us pray for the relief and rebuilding efforts in this poor nation of Haiti.

Wednesday
The Chinese government has an ambitious plan to bring many of the villages into the digital age by providing digital television broadcasts and making television, computers, and cell phones available in all rural areas. Currently almost all of the farmers have televisions and cell phones. Rural ministry is undergoing lots of challenges and church attendance has dropped as people have many options for entertainment as well as staying home to watch their favorite shows or stay connected to the internet. We pray for hunger for Truth and a desire to be fed spiritually in the churches of China. May the Lord grant us another revival.

Thursday
The lack of a sense of belonging is particularly common among people in big cities in China. The huge movement of people from villages to cities to seek jobs has created a whole segment of the population unable to afford the high living standard they find in the cities so they become marginalized and feel lonely, depressed and rootless. Although the gospel of Jesus is good news for all, especially the lowly and downcast, unfortunately, urban churches are generally hesitant to reach out to the lowly and marginalized people. Let us pray for a heart of mercy and compassion for the believers and churches and that they will be willing to share the gospel with everyone.

Friday
In 2009 China's real estate market was in a frenzy. With so many people buying houses in fear of skyrocketing prices and buying automobiles because of the government stimulus program, parking spaces have become precious and are the hottest commodities to be found. As more people own cars, churches need to find places for people to park on Sundays. It also means that believers can attend other churches, even those one thought to be distant. Churches must have a vision for growth and outreach to their communities. Let us pray for them as they tackle the issue of parking and how to minister to members who live far away.

Saturday
As the youth from rural areas leave home for work in the cities, those who are married inevitably experience problems in spousal and parent-child relationships. Divorce is not uncommon for those who go to work in the city. For millions, the precious two-week period during the Chinese New Year when they can be together does little to patch up the cacks in their marriage. Let us pray earnestly for all believers whose marriages are suffering. Stress from family, money issues and poor communication simply cause the fragile relationship to break. We believe God can do the impossible fo those who seek Him and we pray for every couple that is seeking divine help in their marriage.

Sunday
Beijing police canceled the first gay pageant scheduled in China. Their opposition to homosexuality is not due to religion, and attitudes are slowly shifting among city dwellers from one of intolerance to indifference. Gays in China say their biggest challenge is dealing with parents and deeply ingrained expectations for them to get married and have children. Sexual morality has changed greatly in China for gays and straights alike. All sexual sins are wrong in God's eyes. Let us pray for the guarding of the hearts of all believers. We pray especially for Christian businessmen who must entertain as part of their business dealings.

Monday
A foreign magazine claims that the 21st century is China's century--all eyes will be on China and wealth and power will converge on the East. In the Chinese calendar, 2010 is the Year of the Tiger so it is little wonder that many Chinese are confident and excited in their outlook for this century. We pray for the many churches who are planning their evangelistic meetings for the coming Chinese New Year season. This is indeed the best time for outreach and during this time many come to accept Jesus. As people feel proud and upbeat, we humbly pray for the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in their hearts and lives.

Prayer Request 1/12 - 1/18

Tuesday
The hit television series Dwelling Narrowness was recently banned. The series focused on the skyrocketing property prices and the pressure on the middle class to put up mortgages. It also highlighted the anxiety of Chinese authorities over the widespread public discontent about the steep prices put on homes. We can all pray for young Christian couples who work to make their house payments as they learn to set priorities in life and put God first, and to invite Christ to be the Master of their home. Many young believers have unbelieving parents and we pray for their desire to witness to them and still honor them.

Wednesday
A well-known euphemism for the common practice of married men keeping mistresses (colorful flags), is "The Red Flag does not fall at home, yet colorful flags flutter outside". Such an arrangement is almost considered acceptable in China today and those who are faithful to their spouses are ridiculed as impotent and oppressed. We pray for the alarming and rapid decay of morality in China. May the Lord guard our own hearts and protect our families starting with a true hunger for His Word and His holiness. We also remember and pray for deliverance of all those who have fallen away from the faith and are now living in sin.

Thursday
In China, trying to find a suitable living arrangement for orphans is still a thorny social issue because the society is known for tight family relationship. There are government-run orphanages but their overall quality are inconsistent or inadequate at best. Most orphanages receive financial support from abroad. There are also smaller scale orphanages, often a few orphans adopted and cared for by local churches. We are called to show compassion to the poor and orphaned. We pray that more churches will reach out to their communities and serve those who are weak and even despised.

Friday
The majority of Chinese parents who push their child to attend college do not have college degree. They know without a college education, their child will “go no where” in today’s society. Parents feel lost and even hopeless when their child does not make it to college. We pray for parents who are anguish and disappointed by their child’s academic performance. We pray for faith in God and their willingness to trust God have the best for their child.

Saturday
Chinese parents literally believe once their only child get into college, it is like getting into heaven. Conversely, not getting into college is a miserably failure and shame. Such attitude encourages parents to give their college-bound child all the money they need, even if they have to go into debt. For Christian kids, going to college implies a disconnect from their home church and many are lost to follow-up and stop going to church/fellowship completely. Let us pray for the continuing faith and attending churches of all the young people who grew up in Christian homes.

Sunday
A young Chinese urban family (those who are 25 years old) saves almost 30% of their disposable income, as do those that who are headed by 60-year old. Young families and old people are the most thrifty, one saving for their children' education and the other for medical expenses. In China the cost of everything keeps increasing and people feel uncertain about having enough money for living expenses in the future. Let us pray for faith in God for all of us, for without such trust in God we find it difficult to give to God's work or even to send people as missionaries.

Monday
China is the nation with the most smokers, nearly 350 million people, about 1/3 of the world's smokers. Interestingly, 56% of male Chinese physicians smoke, too, and the majority of them do not know how to effectively kick the smoking habit. It is predicted that Chinese hospitals will become smoke-free in 2011. Many believers struggle to stop smoking but are not able to. They have trouble not only with smoking but also with gambling, cussing, and abusive language. Let us pray for the powerful transformation of life by the Holy Spirit in all who seek to live a new life for Christ

Prayer Request 1/5 - 1/11

Tuesday
The majority of wealthy Chinese businessmen who made their fortune twenty to thirty years ago had no more than a grade school education. They have, however, put a great emphasis on sending their children abroad to receive the best education possible. Many are excited to see how their children will combine their huge family wealth with the Western business perspectives they learned. Younger Chinese pastors now have far more theological training than the previous generations of church workers had. Older pastors emphasize that spirituality comes from suffering for Christ and a sacrificial commitment to Him. Let us pray for a smooth transition of leadership in the churches. May the Lord bless us with another generation of faithful workers.

Wednesday
The Communist Party claims to have more than seventy-two million members, the largest party in the world. It is very strict about admitting new members but its ranks still grow by seven percent annually. Realistically and practically, one has little opportunity to advance without being a member of the party in China. College students who come to know Jesus always struggle with the problem of whether their faith will hurt their chance to get party membership. We pray along with them for faith in the eternal and almighty God, for their commitment to Jesus and their sense of betraying the expectations of their parents by giving up party membership.

Thursday
It is common for young people in rural areas to get married and then go to work in the cities. This is both a tradition and also a fulfilling of the expectation of their parents. As the divorce rate increases in this group, they face the problem of who will care for their elderly parents, who will care for their children, and the division of their properties back home in the village. Many young people have grown up in church but have long ago stopped attending church and literally "lost their faith". We take this time to pray for those "lost" sheep and those who are struggling with broken marriages. May the Lord be merciful and gracious and help them to return to His fold.

Friday
It is common to see one pastor shepherd multiple congregations. Such disparity in the pastor/member ratio creates a situation where pastors are unable to meaningfully care the needs of the believers. Pastors are extremely busy because they have to take on the responsibility of the administration (paying for utilities, renting and other expenses) of multiple meeting sites. Lacking a true coworker team is a common problem for many churches, because many churches are run in a very centralized and closed fashion. Let us pray for all the churches, as they seek people who are willing to commit and building up of leadership team.

Saturday
Improving both the quantity and quality of pastors is one of the biggest challenges of the Chinese churches. Many answered the call but lack a systematic theological training, many lack the concept of how to properly minister the congregation. Many of them are sent out to do task that is far demanding and inadequately equipped. We must continue to beseech the Lord to strengthen the shepherd and send more workers. In the mean time, we are committed to pray for those who badly needs encouragement, refreshing and equipping. We too pray that their sheep will empathize with them and being appreciative of their pastors, instead of being critical and demanding.

Sunday
For Chinese parents, the ultimate and the entire effort of education is to get their only child into college. That means getting the best grades at every stage. Parents often repeat the mantra: "There are xxx days till college examination." or "study like hell and you will enjoy paradise in college". Far more youth are not able to get into college, because they lack the grades or financial ability. We pray especially for Christian teens who must start working at the end of high school. We know God has a perfect plan for them even without a college education. May the Lord grant them faith in Him and favor before all people.

Monday
Ministry among college students has become an important component of ministry in China. Some colleges have five or six fellowship groups or even more. This is a new chapter in the history of house churches and some of them are composed exclusively of students and recent college graduates. We take this time to pray for those student churches. It is not easy to carry them on because of the nature of this kind of ministry. The students cannot stay on after graduation and are not able to contribute to the work financially. We pray for all of the discipleship training done in these student fellowships and churches. May the Lord reward those who are leading, who are involved and who give to these young believers.
