Prayer Request 11/27 - 12/3

Tuesday
An estimated twenty-five percent of the luxury purchases in the world are now made by Chinese nationals--a fivefold increase from five percent in 2007. China remains the market where brands of luxury items are recruiting customers rather than serving repeats. Chinese believers are much better off financially than they were in the past but their giving has not increased much. We pray for thanksgiving for them and also that they will willingly and joyfully give to the Lord.
Wednesday
The market for luxury goods is booming in China because of the expansion by retailers in all of the cities which means there is a trend to open shops selling luxury goods in cities as large as Paris or San Francisco for the first time. The number of churches in smaller cities is actually greater than that in the big ones in China. In the so-called mid-sized cities, many churches have no full-time pastors. Let us pray for vision, wisdom, boldness, and a strong witness for those brothers and sisters who lead these churches.
Thursday
The Chinese government faces the problem of an ever-increasing foreign trade reserve. Officials are concerned on how to spend this huge fund, about devaluation of the US dollars and investment returns. Chinese companies also worry about the safety, liquidity and preservation of their trade reserves. Although majority of Chinese believers are better off today than twenty years ago financially, the giving has not increased significantly in most churches. We ask the Lord to give all believers a heart of thanksgiving and generosity, rather than feeling they are still poorer compared to others.
Friday
Chinese churches shun away from talking about money and finances as if it is not spiritual. Money matters, compensation for pastors and tithing are generally taboo subjects. These all contribute to the neglect of pastors. We pray for changing of the attitude of all believers, of giving thanks for what we have and willingness to give to God with gladness. May the Lord change Chinese believers' attitudes toward God’s servants, willing to care for them more financially.
Saturday
Many farmers move into cities but can still collect dividends from the agricultural collective back home, land compensation, or even resettlement benefits if their land was bought. Cities want to have the cheap laborers from the villages but prefer not to offer them adequate social benefits. Urban residents, however, commonly dislike and despise the migrant workers from the villages. We pray that rural believers would show the love of Jesus to migrant laborers in their neighborhood and have the burden to share the gospel with them.
Sunday
The decline of the church in rural China is quite evident. The majority of rural believers working in the cities are plugged into local churches there or even stop attending church. Thus, the vast majority of rural believers who move into the cities are lost to the church where they grew up. May the Lord have mercy on all the ministries designed to reach out and care for migrant workers in the cities. We need to pray for churches in the countryside to know how to disciples their young believers so they will not be lost to the temptations they face in the cities.
Monday
The one-child policy in China implies that one young couple will have to care for four elderly people and as the villages have become more urbanized, the expense of caring for the elderly has quickly risen. It is Biblical for believers to honor their parents and care for them when they are old. Let us pray that young Christians will be willing to care for their aging parents and treat them with love and tenderness, thus through these actions and coupled with their testimony, lead them to know Jesus Christ as Savior.

Prayer Request 11/20 - 11/26

Tuesday
The outgoing political leader in China has acknowledged the rampant corruption inside the ranks of the Communist Party which will wreak havoc for those continuing in control of the party. The new generation of leaders will need to work hard to solve this problem. As believers we are called to pray for political leaders and those who rule over us. Let us pray that under the new leadership churches in China will continue to grow and the issue of church registration will become more favorable and clear.
Wednesday
Xi Jinping's father was a revolutionary hero who fought along with Mao Zedong. Although he was deposed in 1960, he was later vindicated and ascended to the top level of party leadership. Mr. Xi is one of the so-called "princelings" who are now in senior positions in the military and in politics. The power and wealth of the "princelings" in China are enormous due to their family background, education, and connections. Let us pray for many young believers who feel discouraged and sad because they feel they do not have any advantages in life or lack the connections to get a job.
Thursday
The new leader in China is considered to be very personable and charismatic. He enjoys soccer and Hollywood big-budget films. He is known for his physique, his deep voice, a trophy wife who is a famous folk singer but has held a very low profile in public. Church leaders in China must present a "spiritual appearance" and are usually not considered to be personable or approachable. Let us pray for all the leaders and their families that they will have the ability to connect with their flocks as their friends as well as their shepherds.
Friday
The new leader of China is no stranger to the cruelty of the power struggle of the Communist Party. During the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76. Mr.Xi was sent to Shaanxi for seven years where he lived in caves, dug trenches, and cleared pig manure from their pens as part of the nationwide re-education of youth. Those in that generation who experienced the horrific Cultural Revolution invariably have psychological scars. They are also in church leadership now. We pray they will be more trusting, less defensive to criticism, and more open to suggestions because of God's love.
Saturday
In 1982 Xi Jinping made a strategic decision and he requested to go back to the place he had served at the grassroots level as vice mayor in Hebei and later in Xiamen City. He developed good sense to business issues and his political skills were honed in the process of dealing with Taiwan. A well-rounded leader needs to have some experience at the grass root level. Let us pray for courage and good interpersonal skills for all the new pastors. Most have never received any mentoring or supervision so sadly they have learned only through making mistakes themselves.
Sunday
It is totally unrealistic to expect large-scale changes overnight in any new political leadership. There is no way one single leader can change China immediately. If he somehow jeopardizes the collective interest of the other faction, his fate is dimmed as previous failed leaders have shown. Churches in China also change slowly but we need to pray that aged pastors will be willing to give younger ones room to practice and grow. We also ask the Lord for patience and humility for the younger leaders.
Monday
Beijing has always seen Fujian as the military front and future battleground and this has resulted in this area lagging behind other coastal provinces economically. Fujian Province is only eighty-five miles from Taiwan and in the past the majority of construction there has been for military purposes rather than for roads and ports. Churches in Fujian have flourished because of its long Christian history and connection with Southeast Asia's Chinese communities. We lift up all the believers there as well as the increasing number of training centers and efforts by churches to reach out to their communities.

Prayer Request 11/13 - 11/19

Tuesday
Zhejiang, a province on the east coast of China, has had the most "farmers changing to non-farmers". As it has become more prosperous this has changed and more farmers are staying in their villages to farm and earn as much money as they would in the city. The affluence of Zhejiang where there are many magnificent churches is famous throughout China. We want to pray for the spiritual growth of believers there. May the Lord bless them with a great revival so they will be able to help many other weak and struggling smaller churches.
Wednesday
In the prosperous province of Zhejiang, it is said that one can spend 100 yuan and a pack of expensive cigarettes to hire a migrant worker to "knife his enemy". A young migrant worker in Zhejiang earns about 1500 yuan a month and spends 150 yuan on cigarettes, 300 yuan on food and 300 yuan on the Internet. Not all migrant workers are able to sent money home and even if they do, it is usually a very small amount. We pray for Christian families whose children are working in the cities that the Lord will keep them from sin and temptation and that He will connect them closely to a church or fellowship of believers.
Thursday
In the poorer central and western region in China, in addition to the shortage of healthcare resources, a greater challenge is people’s high expectation for medical care. In the large hospitals, there is an invariably a long line for registration, payments, examination, pharmacy and even surgery.Churches face a similar problem since the rural churches have few resources. In general, rural preachers lack adequate training. We pray for faith for those who serve in rural churches so they will have the strength and boldness to serve as the Lord has called them to do.
Friday
As the medical standards of county-level hospitals improve, it is expected that two-thirds of residents in rural areas will be able to utilize medical care at that level and then hospitals in the large cities will not be so crowded. A majority of the church buildings in the country areas are old and need rebuilding. Let us remember those churches who are planning to rebuild or are in the process of raising funds. We pray for unity of spirit and revival in these churches as they expand their facilities and ministries.
Saturday
Even though the county-level hospitals are improving, there is still a shortage of good doctors which cannot be solved by rotating a few doctors there from city hospitals. In order to prevent people from flooding to hospitals in cities, China needs better hospitals in the rural areas, ones people can trust. We continue to pray for the spiritual state and quality of preaching in all of the rural churches. We know it will take generations to improve but we know their simple faith in God is a wonderful example for all of us.
Sunday
According to a conservative estimate there are about 50 million Christians in China. About three or four years ago there was a Korean estimate of 80 million. Hong Kong scholars believe that 30 million is more reasonable despite the claim some have made of 100 million believers. The number of Chinese believers has been growing and we praise God for that but it is obvious that churches in rural areas are in serious decline and need our prayers to sustain them. Today we beseech God to send revival to these churches.
Monday
It is difficult to get an accurate count of believers even from the government’s “Three-self” churches because, 1) local government do not want to report the existence of large number of Christians, 2more believers means more fees and, 3) some believers refuse to report their numbers. Let us pray for revival in all of the open churches. May the Lord give their leaders a burden to take the gospel into their communities. These churches have the same problem found elsewhere of having a large number of believers but very few full-time workers so they must depend on volunteers to carry out their caring ministries.

Prayer Request 11/6 - 11/12

Tuesday
In China, culture and the arts develop under the watchful eye of the government and anything too hip or interesting gets shut down. In Korea, by contrast, artists and entertainers thrive in a space that is highly commercialized but also quite free of interference by the state. Churches in China emphasize tradition and conformity. Let us pray they will stay culturally relevant and not disconnected from society. We pray that many churches will make it their priority to reach out to young people.
Wednesday
Korean culture has deeply influenced all of Asia, especially the young people. The popularity of Korean drama has also led to the favor of their movies, music, and food. In contrast the only part of Chinese culture which has been exported is the Kung Fu movies. Churches in China boast of millions of believers. We pray they will soon have a great impact for God's kingdom in the world but first they must become a shining testimony for the Lord in China.
Thursday
The "Korean Wave" profoundly affects both the entertainment and education industries in China. The Korean fever started when the Hunan Satellite TV Company ran the soap opera "Dai Jang Geum". Korean movies are also very popular in China. The contribution and influence of Korean Christians to the church in China is also deep and wide. We praise God for all the seminaries, and training centers supported and operated by missionaries from Korea. We thank the Lord, too, for Korean praise music which is especially popular among young Christians in China.
Friday
When the Korean fever swept through China, many actors and directors openly criticized the trend and called for the government to resist this invasion of Korean culture. The majority of leaders in the Chinese churches are either ignorant of or antagonistic to popular culture which makes it difficult for the churches to engage and attract young people. We pray that churches will be more open and accepting of present-day life so sinners can feel loved by the Body of Christ.
Saturday
South Korea, a country with the twice of the population of Shanghai, somehow knows how to capture all of Asia and reap a huge profit in the process. K-pop concerts in both Hong Kong and mainland China are very lucrative and Korean artists are well positioned to sell their wares in the largest music market--China. Korean influences are evident in churches in China, especially in the cities and among college students. There are close to eight thousand Korean missionaries in China. We pray for their ministries that the Lord will give them much good fruit and a large harvest.
Sunday
In its early years, the Korean Wave didn't seem to be so imperialistic as American culture but more recently there has been a backlash from a loud minority of the people. This year China passed a law limiting the amount of foreign programming that can be shown on TV. Historically, Chinese youth have not seen churches as friendly or welcoming. In the majority of churches it is hard to find any young people. We pray that more churches will put forth the effort to attract young people. We also ask the Lord to change the biased attitude many church leaders have toward young people.
Monday
The Korean Wave, far from seeming to be a benign export from a non-threatening country, is now commonly described as an "invasion" as though it were a sort of mental Asian carp that is clogging the minds of young Asians. Many Chinese youth adore and imitate the looks and fashions of K-pop artists. Young Chinese Christians badly need mentors who provide role models of faith. We pray there will be many more mature believers who see this unmet need and step up to inspire young people live a faithful life for Jesus and serve Him.
