Prayer Ruquest 1/27-2/2

Tuesday
Chinese New Year and the Spring Festival are the biggest shopping season in China. Yet, the consumers are very edgy and reluctant this year. Several major retail chains all have announced discount, the steepest in more than a decade. When people feel insecure, they do not give liberally either. Let us pray for the need of the ministry for all Chinese churches as they face the drop in offering. We pray especially for believers to have trust and unwavering faith in God's provision.

Wednesday
In the ongoing corruption trial, the ex-president of Taiwan has repeatedly insisted that he is politically persecuted and that he is bearing the "Cross of Taiwan's justice system". Whether this is good for the church to have such a sacred term popularized by the media remains to be seen. Let us pray for more believers who will be willing to share the message of the cross with others, especially in conversation with their friends.

Thursday
More than 200 million migrant laborers returned home for the Chinese New Year. They are faced with the unprecedented crisis—unemployment and inadequate social security. In the past, they returned with money happily and set out again with new laborers for new opportunities. This year, however, many returned home early and empty-handed. They have no idea what to do after the Chinese New Year. Let us pray for this unprecedented phenomenon throughout rural china and how it is affecting rural churches and believers. May the Lord strengthen those who place faith in Him and give wisdom to the rural church leaders in how to help their sheep.

Friday
In the earthquake affected Sichuan region, many are living in the temporary housings. Government have provided adequately and children are attending schools. Although, many rescue personnel have left, many Christians have stayed to help with counseling and rebuilding. Let us pray for the rebuilding effort and the psychological recovery of hundreds of thousands victims. We have faith that God will use the efforts Christians poured into here and bear fruits in His own timing.

Saturday
According to the Chinese zodiac signs, this is the year of the ox. Chinese people like to greet each other using the animal of the year. However, the ox is not an animal associated with fortune or blessing. The ox is regarded as inferior, slow, and insensitive in the Chinese mind. We know that blessing comes from the Lord alone and our hope is in Him. We pray that all believers will experience His presence and that churches will grow stronger in this economically turbulent time.

Sunday
A total of 12.46 million Chinese applicants took the entrance exam for postgraduate studies this year. Chinese enthusiasm for postgraduate studies has been growing since 2001 as job hunting became increasingly difficult. Student ministry has always been a bright spot, but many realize that these new converts must be connected with churches once they graduated; otherwise, there is a high rate of loss. Let us pray for the faith of those who have graduated and may the Holy Spirit quicken them to continue to be part of His Body.

Monday
Yunnan's county court sentenced sect leaders belonging to one of the most notorious cult in China, the Eastern Lightening. Many cults have been targeted by the police but often continue to evade arrest and wreck havoc for countless churches. These cult members are aggressive in tactic; aiming to "steal" naive sheep. Believers are often lacking in discernment and are ill-equipped to defend themselves with Word of God. Again, we pray for good feeding of Word of God for all Chinese churches, especially the rural ones. We too beseech the Lord to protect countless of weak sheep, especially those without shepherds.

Prayer Ruquest 1/20-1/26

Tuesday
China is considering altering the lifetime job security policy for her 12 million civil servants. Those who fail once in the annual evaluation will have their pay reduced and after two consecutive years of poor service will be dismissed. We are not suggesting that there are many preachers who are doing a poor job but there are many who are struggling with serving God faithfully, being strong in their marriage, and in integrity. Let us all humbly ask the Holy Spirit to lead us since we all will have to give a report to God.

Wednesday
Xian was once China's glorious capital for almost eight decades, but it has slipped significantly in terms of GDP output and average per capita income (even coming behind Urumqi in the Western China). Islam came to Xian in the seventh century, till this day, there is a large pocket of Muslim neighborhood.Let us pray for Xian, for the vibrant college ministries through out the city and believers willing to share the Gospel with their Muslim neighbors.

Thursday
As one look deeper into Chinese churches, many would feel saddened by the secularization and many so-called believers but deem their faith as mere superstitions. Others must contend with churches where teaching of God's Word is missing, truth of salvation is neglected and pulpits are pre-approved by officials and downplaying the significance of Biblical miracles. Let us pray along with these Jeremiah of China churches, we too pray even fervently for a revival of Chinese churches.

Friday
Listening to radio is ubiquitous in China and there are countless radio stations. A whole spectrum of broadcast are unique to Chinese, many programs offer tips on investing and money matters, literally attracts millions of listeners. Other popular programs are talk show which give commentaries and retelling the Chinese literary classics. Many believers are just Sunday church goers, they have a great void in their lives and are without divine guidance. Let us pray for Christians who are seeking true direction in their lives, needing the wisdom in how to manage money and finding true gratification with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Saturday
There are many programs training young men and women for serving in church. Great majority of these students are relatively young with high school or less education. In general they are familiar with the Biblical knowledge but many are badly lacking in interpersonal relationship skills. Some do not have clear calling. Let us pray for all those who are in Bible training or seminary, we ask the Holy Spirit for the divine work of character molding and spiritual maturation.

Sunday
Pollution has long been a huge concern in China, few streams and lakes escape dumping of chemicals and industrial wastes. Finding a safe water source in many regions is a dire concern. Local officials often turn a blind eye to such violation. The attitude of "do anything to save or make money" is so prevalent. Let us uplift all the believers in our prayers, so they may live a purified life in the midst of physical and spiritual pollutions.

Monday
The number of leprosy cases have dropped from 500,000 fifty years ago to less than 6000. Yunnan has the most cases, because much of the province is still listed as poor. One in 10 of the so-called "people of absolute poverty" in China live in Yunnan. The impoverished are easily forgotten and the Lord commands us to care for them. We remember all those who have little but need badly God's great love.

Prayer Ruquest 1/13-1/19

Tuesday
Shenzhen became a Special Economic Zone in 1982 and was transformed from a sleepy town to a showcase of China's economic accomplishments during the past thirty years. There are five such Special Economic Zones: Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Shantou of Guandong, Xiamen, and Hainan province. Let us pray especially for the work of the church and spiritual vitality for the believers in these five cities. Prosperity is often a double-edged sword and when believers are wealthy, churches frequently lose their zeal and become lukewarm.

Wednesday
There are 660 cities in China that contain factories and employ 18,000,000 people from rural regions each year. These tidal waves of human migration are changing the landscape of China. The "ming gong" go where jobs are plentiful, with Beijing in the north, Shanghai, and Guangdong being the three major regions. Meeting the spiritual needs of "ming gong" or migrant workers is daunting and often frustrating because of the harsh working conditions and demands on their time. Let us remember those who train the factory workers and those who are sowing the seeds of the gospel near factories.

Thursday
One article refers to 20 millions of Communist Party member are involved in religious activities and many of them are Christian (Protestants and Catholics). A recent Party directive speaks of religious influence is "worse" than the Western values. Again, we pray for this vast number of "secret disciples" of Jesus, for their boldness and spiritual growth. We too uplift their family relationship and their witness to their families.

Friday
Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing, Hangzhou, Tangshan, Qingdao, Nigbo, and Xian (in descending order) have been named the "most loving cities in China" in terms of disaster relief, civic charity, and the participation of their citizens in business and volunteer work ,and ongoing charitable projects. Churches have a strong presence in most of these cities. Let us pray specifically for the believers in there that they may live out the love of Jesus Christ and show compassion in their communities.

Saturday
Guangdong is the most populous province in China with 94 million residents. A large influx of migrant workers seeking jobs and the high birth rate fuel this rapid population growth. Despite the large number of people there, Guangdong is often considered to be hard soil for the gospel to penetrate and the churches are weak. People are materialistic or else too busy to listen. Let us pray for revival in the churches and that beievers will place God as their first priority in life.

Sunday
Half of the students in China believe their parents care only about their school grades and nearly ninety percent admit that academic performance is their own top concern. Students say that disappointing their parents is their number one worry. Christian parents often feel that for their children to get good grades is more important than for them to have a close relationship with God. We pray along with all of the Christian parents who are concerned about their children drifting away from their faith but also still are greatly concerned about the future of their only child.

Monday
What is the common parent-child relationship problem in China? Urban parents are too busy. In the rural families, it is the absence of parents from the home since they work in cities and the families are together only once or twice a year. Let us pray especially for Christian families who are essentially disjointed by being apart. We pray for the children who most commonly live with a relative that their fledgling faith will grow. We pray, too, for the parents that they will stay committed to God and sexually pure.

Prayer Ruquest 1/6-1/12

Tuesday
Hong Kong expects a big drop in tourism and trade as the direct flights between China and Taiwan are initiated. Up to now Hong Kong has been a transit point and financial center for businessmen from Taiwan who were headed for China. Many Chinese mission agencies are also headquartered there. Recently, Hong Kong ranks top among Chinese cities in terms of competitiveness, safety and most generous in giving toward relief (40-50% more than Shenzhen). We praise the Lord that the churches in Hong Kong have always had a strong missions emphasis. May God continue to raise up many of His faithful servants to act as a model for all of the Chinese churches.

Wednesday
Mainland Chinese are extremely optimistic about 2009 while Hong Kong residents are pessimistic according to an international poll. China’s stock market suffered a whopping drop of 60% in 2008. Just about all the ministries in China expect some cut backs because of fewer donations. Let us pray that church work and the vital training of pastors will not suffer because of less giving. We also pray that Chinese believers will have unwavering faith in God.

Thursday
Many factories in China are closing due to the "financial tsunami." Workers are being laid off or being told to "go home early for the Chinese New Year." Finding jobs for millions of unemployed is the biggest challenge China's leadership faces. Workers returning home to the village is good for their family relationship because so many of them have left their children behind for years. We pray for the rural churches as they embrace these returnees. We pray that they will be able to minister and strengthen them while they are at home.

Friday
It is the 30th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relationships between the US and China . Bilateral trade has mushroomed but Taiwan continues to be a thorny issue. Chinese churches in North America have played an important role in training pastors in China and supporting the churches. The divisive issue of Three-self versus House churches is not so contentious as before. We thank the Lord for opening China and the rapid growth we have witnessed. May the Lord continue to bless the mission efforts of North American Chinese churches in China.

Saturday
Having a professional and extravagant wedding portrait is a must for new Chinese couples. The idea is to capture the youth and beauty of the couple in a romanticized "art" work. Poster size wedding photo was originally a practice imported from Taiwan and was quickly adopted in Mainland. Many Christian couples need teaching and counseling, but few churches offer such ministry. Let us pray for all the newly-wedded couples in church, for their adjustment, having Jesus as the head of their family and their serving in church.

Sunday
Thirty years ago, as the Chinese economic reform started, "Ten-thousand yuan household" (wan yuan hu) was the dream of rural families (making 10,000 yuan a year). The new buzz word today is "New Village," which means continuing prosperity, development and democratic rural economy. China's rural churches continue to face challenges in growth as young people leave for work in the cities. Let us pray for all those who serve faithfully and those who continue to inspire and train young men and women to serve despite of their poverty and lack of high school education.

Monday
In the past 30 years (1978 - 2007), the average yearly increase of Beijing city government workers' wages was 15%, rising from 673 to 39,867 yuan. In other sectors, workers in finance enjoyed a 33% yearly increase, but in service sector, the yearly increase is only 7.5%. In terms of wealth, urban churches have become prosperous and they have extended their help to churches inland. We praise God as wealthy churches support new ministries, missionary efforts, setting up community projects, and even rural church workers.
