Prayer Request 6/24 - 6/30

TuesdayUrumqi is emblematic of the challenges in ethnic conflicts facing Beijing. This city of three million remains on edge since the authorities fear revenge attacks by Han citizens and have deployed heavy guards in front of Uighur schools and in the neighborhoods. We pray for peace in this troubled region, especially for believers there. May the Lord break down the prejudice and the wall of animosity which have hindered the churches in China from sharing the gospel with Muslims for so long.
Wednesday
Urumqi is a booming city that is more than seventy-five percent Han and home to a large Uighur middle class that has mastered the Mandarin language and prospered by landing secure government jobs. We lift up supplications for all the Muslim converts living in Western China where there is a large population of ethnic minorities. May God give them peace and endurance as they face many difficulties and even the threat of death.
Thursday
Just south of the ritzy area near the People's Square in Urumqi, thousands of poor Uighurs, mostly rural migrants, live in ramshackle tenement houses. Most are young men from the Uighur heartland in the South who have few skills and speak only Uighur. We pray for wisdom for local authorities to know how to manage ethnic tensions and prevent conflicts. We pray especially for the Han Christians there that through their good testimonies they will be true peacemakers.
Friday
Chinese believers find it difficult to reach out to Chinese Muslims partly because of the difference in culture and language along with the long history of mutual distrust. They are more willing to evangelize Buddhists or Taoists. We pray none of us due to our ethnic pride will have the attitude of resistance that the prophet Jonah had when he refused to share Jesus with a certain ethnic group. May the Lord soften our hearts and stir our passions to share the gospel with all people.
Saturday
In the past, churches in Hong Kong took it upon themselves to provide financial assistance or training for pastors to the churches in China as their giving to missions. Through this they had good success and achieved much but now many of the churches in China are very self-sufficient in many respects. During this past decade some of the churches in Hong Kong have stopped supporting the churches in China. There are still some people from there serving in China but that number is dwindling fast. We pray for more younger leaders and workers with a passion and a burden to work with churches in China.
Sunday
According to statistics, a record number (40.7 million) of people from mainland China crossed the border to Hong Kong last year. That is up 16.7 percent from the previous year and nearly ten times the number for 2001. It means that Hong Kong remains by far the most popular destination for travelers from China. Young people in Hong Kong have a certain amount of antagonism toward China which is reflected in the waning of missions to China from churches in Hong Kong. We praise God for the wonderful and exemplary work they have done and pray the Lord will stir up their fervor for China once more.
Monday
People from mainland China go to Hong Kong to shop for items for daily use rather than buying only big-ticket or luxury items there. Because of the favorable exchange rate, clothing in Hong Kong is considered to be cheap and there is a large selection. As the political integration increases between the island and the mainland so does the tension between the two places. We pray for the people in the churches in Hong Kong in his transition of mission support for churches on the mainland. May the Lord raise up more pastors and young people who will love Him and the churches in China.

Prayer Request 6/10 - 6/16

TuesdayRecently the house churches in China have been more open and even bolder than before. A church in Beijing has been pushing and testing its limits with the government on the openness of a Christian gathering, autonomy, and the legal status of an urban house church. We praise God for the different views believers in China have on how their churches should be legal and open. We pray for divine protection, boldness and wisdom for those who are on the forefront of this matter so they will be known for their fervor and their compassion as Jesus Christ was.
Wednesday
In the cities of China, people can attend the Three Self churches but in villages where the majority of Christians live, Three Self churches often fail to build more churches to accommodate the increase numbers of believers. Most of their pastors are busy serving their congregations and do not focus on outreach. It is true that shepherds do not produce sheep and it is believers who lead their friends to church. Evangelism should not be a task left for preachers only. We pray that Christians will have a strong desire to share the gospel with others in word and deed.
Thursday
Scores of both Protestant and Catholic church buildings have been demolished in Wenzhou, a coastal city nicknamed "The Jerusalem of the East" for its large Christian population. Local officials cite violation of building codes as the cause of this action. We pray this is not a sign that the government is tightening its grip on the spread of Christianity in China. May the Lord comfort the people in those churches so they do not lose courage in sharing the gospel and know that the church of Christ is not a building but the people who worship Him.
Friday
Many suspect that churches in Wenzhou and Hangzhou are currently "facing persecution" because they are "too conspicuous." Nearly all the buildings demolished belong to registered churches, and the structures were government-approved, but had serious building code violation. We know the official religious policy can changes over night and "big tree catches wind". We pray for wisdom and God's favor for all churches as they deal with officials in all matters regarding permits and compliances.
Saturday
The government of China has been trying to integrate house churches with the Three Self churches but a union of these churches is far from satisfactory since the Three Self churches are seen to be controlled by the government and wounds from the past are still fresh. We pray especially for all of the pastors serving in the Three Self churches and ask God to give them messages to preach, a vibrant spirit, an ever increasing love for Jesus and His sheep, and faithfulness in serving our Lord.
Sunday
During the past decade, urban house churches have become more open--from being "underground" to being public. For example, they now announce their existence with names, combine groups of believers, move from fellowship groups to having Sunday services, and lease office buildings as meeting places. We pray specifically for websites and magazines published by churches and church-based ministries such as disaster relief and their evangelistic efforts. May the Lord use and protect what they do so that people will know of their existence and they will also lead people to know the Lord.
Monday
Statistics tell us that every year 250,000 people die of suicide in China and another two million people try to do it. Suicide is much more common in villages than in cities and smaller cities have more than larger ones do. More older people commit suicide than do young people. We pray for China, for society, for families and for individual people that Christians may be more closely engaged with their communities, more caring for their neighbors. May they have a good testimony showing the love of God to broken people.

Prayer Request 6/3 - 6/9

TuesdayPolice in Shanghai are now allowed to bear arms and to fire them under certain circumstances. This is historic for police in China and gives them the power to deter criminals and terrorists. The same policy will soon expand to the rest of China Police carrying real guns will hopefully improve the sense of security for many people. Let us pray that churches will redouble their efforts to share Jesus Christ with their neighbors as people grow cynical about the pervasive corruption and lack of security in society.
Wednesday
Allowing policemen in China to carry firearms is necessary since the number of criminals and terrorist attacks are increasing. In recent months three separate knife attacks in train stations caused multiple injuries and rocked the nation. These attacks were attributed to people from disgruntled ethnic minorities and those who were mentally ill. The general attitude toward Muslims is full of suspicion at best. We pray that Christians will not lose their zeal and compassion to share the Gospel with the Muslim minorities.
Thursday
More middle-class Chinese are applying for emigration to the United States, Canada, Australia, and even Europe than ever before. About 80,000 Chinese have been given permanent residency in the United States. These are mostly mid-career professionals who have little to gain financially by leaving China. Chinese churches in North America and Australia will definitely benefit from this new wave of immigrants. We pray for this wonderful opportunity to share the Gospel, baptizing and teaching them as churches reach out and embrace these immigrants.
Friday
Most of the Chinese who emigrated abroad gave their main reason as “seeking a better quality of life”, giving up the rat race in China for the boring lifestyle of the West. Many families also choose to send the wife and children abroad while the wife stays in China to work. We praise God for the steady growth of Chinese churches abroad, not only in student ministries but also in that with new immigrants. We pray specifically for the new crops of Mainland-born seminary students and pastors who are now serving the Lord in China. May the Lord use them with their background to connect with the new immigrants overseas.
Saturday
The issue of a Christian seeking a compatible spouse who is also a believer is not new but a new twist is dating websites that are designed specifically for Christian singles. These websites advise people that “online dating is still somewhat risky. Be sure to verify the true faith and personal information” of the person you are contacting. We pray for wisdom for those who use these large dating web sites that the Holy Spirit will give them discernment and protect them from the dangers of malicious users and that all will desire to seek God’s will and not compromise their faith for friendship or love.
Sunday
Because of the expectations of society and the family for young people to marry, young Chinese Christians (especially those whose parents aren’t believers) are under extreme pressure to marry. Their parents do not understand or accept their commitment to marry a Christian. We pray for all of the sisters who are unmarried or divorced but wanting to get married again that the Lord will give them peace and joy in their lives as they grow deeper in the truth and trusting God for His provision and timing in all things.
Monday
Single Christian ladies find the situation quite disappointing because there are few available men in the church and they face tremendous pressure from their families to get married quickly and produce a son. There is a great need in the churches for more pastors and older couples who can minister to the large numbers of unmarried or divorced believers who need to be cared for and encouraged so they will not feel inferior or unloved by God or their church.
