Prayer Request 6/25 - 7/1

Tuesday
Between 2007 and 2012 Chongqing was the city in China in which millionaires increased most rapidly (by 80%). Chengdu and Fuzhou’s multi-millionaire population also increased greatly (60%) during that same period. The so-called “second tier” cities in China have enjoyed an economic boom and believers there have prospered as well, but they have become lukewarm. We pray for the revival of believers and that the Holy Spirit will stir up their passion and love for the Lord to serve in these cities.
Wednesday
Being a government official in China is now a very high-risk profession. One official said that paranoia is part of life. Many colleagues live in dread that their faces appearing in flagrante delicto will surface online and doom their careers. King David’s words of repentance were, “I have sinned against the Lord!”. We pray for believers who have drifted away from God or are living in sin. May the Spirit of the Lord convict each of us to turn away from sin because God is faithful and He will forgive all of our iniquity.
Thursday
Fears of being exposed have been heightened by a string of high profile blackmail cases. When an official is accused of wrongdoing, the government usually does not say anything so it seems at the end of the day no one really cares if the accusation is true or false. Many Christians are unable to live out their new life in Christ as they should. We pray for integrity of character for all believers. May the Lord great each of us strength to put off the old self and put on the new one which is in the likeness of God.
Friday
Recently, there are more missionaries who enter the Muslim ethnic groups to share the Gospel using the friendship evangelism method. However, the new converts have no place to worship or fellowship and lost to follow up. Let us pray for those believers who are new converts who came from Muslim background. In the time of loneliness and rejection, we ask the Lord to give them peace, joy and comfort. The Holy Spirit be with them and give them the assurance and strength to live out His Word.
Saturday
If a Chinese woman succeeds in college and finish a master’s degree, she is likely to be 25 years old. Official news says, women aged 25 to 27 fall within the first category of “leftover warriors” (sheng doushi) who “still have the courage to fight to find a partner.” Many single sisters in China churches live with their parents. We pray for them for healthy emotional and spiritual lives, may they be free of loneliness, but rather vibrant, loving the Lord and friendly with people.
Sunday
To improve the status of women in China, the slogan of the Party is, "Women hold up half of the sky". Unfortunately, female politicians in China are still rare with only one-fifth of the national deputies being women. At the grassroots level only 2-3% of the Party secretaries and only 22% of the village committee members are women. The vast majority of believers in China are women and the number of female preachers is increasing while the church committee members and volunteers in some churches are exclusively female. We pray that the churches in China will value the importance and contributions of the sisters in their midst.
Monday
Some of the churches in China (the Three-self churches and the seminaries) still uphold the unspoken rule that women should hold only secondary roles in the church, regardless of how gifted they are. According to this view, the sisters should do only visitation, welcoming visitors, singing, cleaning, and preparing meals. Let us remember everyone who serves in the "less important" roles in the church. May the Lord richly reward their humble service and their love for God's people. We pay their unselfish acts will inspire many more young believers to serve.

Prayer Request 6/18 - 6/24

Tuesday
Recently, high school seniors from around China sat for the annual college entrance examination, called the Gaokao. Most Chinese students prepare for years under intense pressure, and families spend huge amounts on tutoring and after-school study sessions. We pray for the families of believers who are waiting for the results of this decisive examination. May the Lord grant them faith, peace, and the knowledge that He has a great plan for their children. We also pray that parents will continue to encourage their children to love and trust God because He is in control.
Wednesday
While increasing numbers of Chinese students go overseas for college – nearly 200,000 went to North America for the 2011-12 academic year – the vast majority have no option for higher education but to do well on the national exam.Overseas Chinese churches have an opportunity to minister to these affluent and fun-loving undergraduates. We pray for the fruitful outreach efforts many churches make as they host events to attract the students and lead them to Jesus.
Thursday
As with nearly everything in China, there are too many people in the educational system competing for a scarce resource. Through the household registration (hukou) system, the college entrance process is biased in favor of urban participants. It seems unfair that college education can literally decide one’s future in China. We pray specifically for rural believers who are often inferior in their education. May the Lord comfort them and help parents to encourage their children to love and serve God more knowing He is impartial.
Friday
The hukou (residency) system perpetuates a rigid caste system. Children who have a rural hukou inherit their parents’ second-class status even though they were born in a city. Many urbanites want to keep this system in place to protect their preferential access to jobs, education, and health care. Some Christians worry about saving money for their children’s education and their own health expenses but lack faith in giving to God. We pray for faith and trust in God so each of us will realize that God will take care of His own people just as He cares for the sparrows.
Saturday
In China, getting into college does not guarantee a good job upon graduation, especially this year. Seven million students who succeeded in passing the Gaokao four years ago are now looking for work in the toughest job market ever. Unemployment and inability to find a suitable job create tension at home. We pray that churches will be able to minister to people who are undergoing these trials and they will experience the meaning of the Scripture which says, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. (Psalm 20:7)
Sunday
While the Chinese government embraces Buddhism and Taoism, it suppresses and monitors Christianity very suspiciously. One reason is the monotheistic theology of Christianity which directly opposes the atheism of Communism. We need to continue to pray for the political leaders that the Lord will open their eyes to see that young people coming to Jesus and joining churches is not a threat to China, but is beneficial to Chinese society.
Monday
Christianity is treated with suspicion by officials in China so undercover agents from the central or local government, the Ministry of Public Security, and the National Security Agency are constantly monitoring churches. It is our duty to pray for peace for all the Christian gatherings and trainings sessions. We pray for wisdom for the church leaders, and effective ministry of outside speakers, so they will not only teach Biblical knowledge, but also inspire students to love the Lord and serve Him wholeheartedly.

Prayer Request 6/11 - 6/17

Tuesday
Chinese officials seek career shortcut with Feng Shui. According to a 2007’s government's study, 52 percent of the nation's county-level civil servants admitted to believing in divination, face reading, astrology or dream interpretation. It is not uncommon to have Christians to be involved in superstitious practice and not realizing the spiritual darkness and danger. We pray for those naive believers who still dabble in practices that do not please the Lord at all. May we all grow in spiritual knowledge and maturity.
Wednesday
Many superstitious officials purposely place a large boulder or a pair of stone lions in front of their buildings to ward off evil or to bring good luck. Many of them consult masters of feng shui to get a lucky date to launch a construction project. Many new young believers are also seeking guidance and direction for their lives. We pray they will receive good advice from the more mature believers in the churches, especially for decisions about marriage since many people struggle with the question of whether to marry a non-believer or not.
Thursday
As Marxist ideology fades in China the ancient mystical beliefs once banned by the Communist Party resurge. Guides to geomancy now fill bookstores and fortune tellers are busily offering costly sessions in astrology and numerology. Businessmen also see the masters of feng shui for financial advice. Christians in China can definitely use more teaching on discerning the will of God. Many believers fall into the trap of being only Sunday Christians but living in sin on weekdays. We pray that each of us will live a consecrated life pleasing to God and glorifying Him.
Friday
This mystical revival of resorting to divination to solve problems is attracting devoted followers among Party officials in China. The country’s ambitious civil servants are increasingly seeing supernatural shortcuts to wealth and power, much to the dismay of party ideologues and those who campaign against corruption. People look for shortcuts to fame and wealth and many people who are Christians are no exception. Many rural believers still believe Jesus will help them become financially successful. Let us pray that the faith of each one of us in Jesus is a pure faith and that our chief desire is to know and obey the One Who blesses us, not the blessing that comes from Him.
Saturday
The practice of Feng Shui by officials is the result of age-old traditions melded with the pressures of careers in which promotions are earned through mastering the dark arts of factions and favors rather than hard work. Let us pray for all believers who seek to advance in their careers and get promotions and better salaries. We know the Lord listens to our prayers and we are reminded that when we honor God, He will honor our requests and take care of all of our needs.
Sunday
Not surprisingly, many practitioners of feng shui are often shamelessly crooked since they feel little accountability to the public. A corrupt official is usually superstitious. Success theology or the “prosperity gospel” has a wide following in China since it claims that believers will be blessed with riches and health if they are good Christians. We pray churches will preach the scripture correctly and believers will be deeply rooted in God’s Word rather than attracted by material blessings only.
Monday
Feng shui actually provides useful opportunities for business people to curry favor with influential bureaucrats. To avoid exposure, officials often use business contacts to introduce them to a clairvoyant and pay him for the consultation which can become very expensive. There any many many gimmicks for getting rich in China and churches are not immune to these. Frankly, some of them are pyramid scams. We need to pray for purity in the Body of Christ in China—that believers will know the churches should be a place of worship and godly fellowship.

Prayer Request 6/4 - 6/10

Tuesday
Although they are affiliated with provincial and local governments or run by private businesses, polytechnics charge up to twice as much tuition as the top universities owned, operated, and heavily subsidized by the central government charge. There are Bible study groups near most college campuses, including the polytechnics. We pray for a powerful witness, an opportunity share Christ, and discipleship for all who are involved in reaching the students in these institutions.
Wednesday
The national entrance exam heavily favors affluent urban children. Top universities which are concentrated in Beijing and Shanghai give preference to local high school students and will admit them with lower exam scores than students from elsewhere. Rural rural students have to have higher scores to get into those schools. As believers we are thankful for God’s grace and we lift up Christian youth who are preparing for the college entrance examination this year. May they continue to experience God’s faithfulness and love as they are under much pressure to do well.
Thursday
Preparation for the college entrance exam is doubly difficult for students because a crucial section of the exam tests competence in English. Rural schools struggle to even find any English teachers so for students from less affluent families, the challenge of getting into a top university would be too great a hurdle to cross. We are not sure what rural churches can do for the education of their young people but we should pray for the quality of rural pastors, their ability to study the Bible, preach effectively, and care well for the sheep. May the Lord give the rural churches workers who are knowledgeable and practical.
Friday
In China the gaokao (the national college entrance exam) has a possible score of 750. To get into an institution of higher education, a student must have a score of at least 280 and to get into one of the nation’s finest four-year universities, a student needs 600 plus points. There are hardly any high school students in churches in China because they are busily preparing for the life-altering gaokao. We pray for their parents as they worry themselves sick about their only child. We pray, too, for churches to find ways to minister to the high school youth who are missing from their congregations.
Saturday
The government in China offers a few scholarships for polytechnic students but they are based on grades and not financial need. Top students who often come from affluent families that could give them more academic support when they are younger, receive grants that cover up to three-quarters of their room and board. College students from poor families know their parents have high expectations for them. Some of them have accepted Jesus through campus ministries and want to enroll in a seminary but they feel they cannot disappoint their parents. Let us pray for these students who struggle fiercely between following God’s calling and filial piety.
Sunday
College students usually pick popular majors that help them find a job later but it is a sobering fact that young college graduates in China are four times as likely to be unemployed as those who attended only elementary school because factory jobs are more plentiful than office jobs. We praise the Lord for the ubiquitous Bible study groups near or on every campus big or small in China. We lift up all the leaders, for their spiritual health and passion as they pour their hearts and efforts into the lives of the collegians. May the Lord protect them and keep them in favor with the officials.
Monday
Nearly half of those who graduated from polytechnic colleges in China last spring are unable to find jobs. Their parents have invested very greatly in the education of their only child so they live in fear that a college degree will not guarantee a job and their children will not be able to provide for them when they are old. Chinese people strongly believe that without a good job a person who lives in China is doomed to be below average. We can pray for faith and trust in God for all Christian parents. God commands us to raise a godly second generation for Him and the Lord has great plans for them if we do our part.
