Prayer Request 5/27-- 6/2

Tuesday
There has been a national outpouring of compassion, generosity, and unity in rescue efforts following the recent earthquake in China. Perhaps this is a blessing in disguise for the future of the country. Many will agree that the greatest need of churches in China today is unity, fewer divisions, less criticism, and a lot more mutual encouragement and appreciation. Let us beseech the Lord for this kind of a spirit of humility and for people to have a vision of others as better than themselves.

Wednesday
It is not uncommon to find fancy county government facilities right in the poorest areas of China. Many reports tell how funds meant for improving the condition of poor people have been misused or embezzled, and thankfully, the Central Government has now determined to crack down on such graft. Let us pray for integrity and a fear of God in each leader whether in the local government or local churches. May the believers have the power to overcome greed.

Thursday
Sichuan has over 250,000 baptized Protestant Christians, 150 churches, one seminary, and 700 meeting points besides 100,000 Catholic believers and in this area, many churches have been destroyed or badly damaged in the region affected by the earthquake. As the entire region rebuilds, let us pray for the reconstruction of these meeting places, not merely the physical buildings but the Body of Christ within them that will minister to and give hope to their communities.

Friday
There are Chinese restaurants all over the world but many times we are surprised by the number of them one finds in one city. In Hamburg, Germany where there are thousands of Chinese students, there are five hundred Chinese restaurants. Many Bible study groups meet in Chinese restaurants after working hours and many of the workers have come to know Christ but they are in great need of long-term follow up. Let us pray for this new ministry of outreach and the restaurant-based churches.

Saturday
In order to get into the top high schools, not only must the students have performed well in the examinations, but their parents must also be willing to pay for the "School Assistance Fees" to gain entrance. These extra fees can amount to a whole year's salary. Getting into a good high school is both extremely competitive and expensive. Let us pray for Christian parents as they seek wisdom in how to give their children the best education with what they can afford.

Sunday
China has been steadily upgrading its militarily capabilities. It is said that they have a total of 100 plus nuclear warheads, which is the least among the five nuclear nations. In term of military exports, China has about 2% of the international market shares. Material prosperity has in some way weakened China's churches in her resolve to evangelize. As China builds its military might, we pray earnestly that Chinese believers will steadily grow to be strong Christian soldiers, too.

Monday
Many foreigners ask, "Are the Olympics being politicized?" Chinese see the Beijing Olympics as more than a sporting event; it is more a defining moment in its national destiny. It is the realization of the "dream of the century" and is equated as "the greatest event." Chinese believers are praying for the Beijing Olympics, to win as many medals and to project the image of "great China" to the world. Let us pray that this would be the time China's churches will see the vision God has given her and find her role in world missions.

Prayer Request 5/20 -- 5/26

Tuesday
Top Chinese leaders were highly visible in the Sichuan earthquake rescue effort. They were prominently portrayed as genuinely compassion and served as a powerful rallying force for the victims and the whole nation. As Christians, we are called to pray for those who rule over us. Let us pray for the leadership in all level of the government, especially those in the Religious affairs. May the Lord also raise up a generation of church leaders who are faithful and caring.

Wednesday
The earthquake in Sichuan and the transition of the Taiwan government have opened many channels of communications across the Strait. China has also accepted Taiwan's official donation for the rescue. It was not long ago that Taiwan experienced the worst "9-21" earthquake. Chinese use the term "brothers in suffering" to describe close kinship. We pray that churches on both sides will grow closer from this tragedy and Taiwan churches will be even more involved in helping churches in the mainland.

Thursday
The earthquake rescue effort turned out to be the largest mobilization of the Chinese military in recent time with nearly 100,000 soldiers involved. We thank the Lord as Chinese Christian volunteers were able to assist in the care of the victims. Christians from nearby churches in Chengdu, as well as from out of town got involved and many wore "Jesus Loves You" T-shirts while giving assistance in various locations.

Friday
Many schoolchildren perished in the earthquake. Not only must thousands of parents suddenly cope with the loss of a child, but many must cope with the loss of their only child. China's population minister recently praised the one-child rule, which dates to 1979, saying it has prevented 400 million children from being born. We continue to pray for all the victims' families, especially the grieving parents. May they come to a personal knowledge of the Father who lost His only begotten Son.

Saturday
Unlike during previous tragedies, the Chinese media reacted with open outrage in the recent massive train accidents in Shandong province. The government swiftly arrested local railroad officials. This is the second major accident of the same rail line in three months. Chinese believers often blame the lack of growth in their churches on their pastors too. Let us pray for all the churches that have become stagnant and even in decline. May the Lord quicken their hearts and fill us all with passion to walk closely with Him.

Sunday
Tigergate, one of several Internet scandals with sexually explicit photos circulating in China and featuring a Chinese rap star, has recently caused a major uproar. This reaction is predictable since they amplify and orchestrate incidents for public consumption and drive traffic to these sites. Many of the things purported to have happened in Chinese churches cannot be fully substantiated or are blown out of proportion in the reporting. Let us pray for even Christians who have a tendency to exaggerate or paint a rosier picture of their ministry.

Monday
Some of the key political figures in Taiwan are professed Christians. The newly elected Vice-president of Taiwan attended the rally of the World Prayer Day and shared his testimony publicly. We uplift these prominent public figures, businessmen and entertainers alike, may the Lord use their influence and testimony for His Kingdom purpose and great role model for young believers. We too pray for the Holy Spirit to keep them from all temptations.

Prayer Request 5/13 -- 5/19

Tuesday
《Special prayer》 As you are aware, the horrendous casualty from the earthquake in Sichuan province Monday continues to rise, and the fear for worse continues.
China hoped 2008 would be a yearlong celebration, a time to bask in the spotlight of the upcoming Beijing Olympics. Instead, the Year of the Rat has been a string of troubles — both natural and man-made — that are diverting the attention from the Olympic.
Remember the paralyzing snow storm in the Chinese New Year, the problem in Tibet, the recent terrible train accidents in Shandong and the viral infection that killed scores of children , all these have poured cold water to the festive mood Chinese are hoping to enjoy toward the August 8, the auspicious opening day of the 2008 Games.
We would like to invite you to pray along with all the Chinese believers in the following:

1. For the rescuing effort and divine comfort for all the victim's families.
2. A window of opportunity for Chinese Christian to demonstrate the love and compassion of God in this time of great suffering.
3. May the Lord soft the heart of all Chinese, not to depend on our strength and might, not to take glory in our own achievement, but to turn to God and give glory to Him alone.
4. Let us pray for all the Chinese churches, Mainland and overseas, as we all unite in prayer to uplift the country in God's hand.

The recent cyclone devastation in Myanmar has affected nearly half of its population. Many victims have yet to receive any relief. The two million Chinese there have largely been spared. The Chinese own rice shops and some have to quickly distribute rice for fear of whole-scale looting. Let us pray for the relief effort there, especially what the local Christian and Chinese churches can do to be a testimony of compassion in this deeply devout Buddhist country.

Wednesday
For many of the young Chinese, graduating from college means unemployment. There is stiff competition for any job for college graduates. In the Xinjiang province, 30% of them are unemployed. There is a sense of desperation among many college students. We are thankful for many students who have come to know Jesus in college, but let us pray that they will remain faithful and walk closely with Him after graduation.

Thursday
For millions of college students, graduation means bleak future. Among the large cities, like Beijing, Changsha, Shanghai, and Wuhan, 1 in 3 graduates will not be able to find a job. Many have even ridiculed the economic benefit of college education, since parents usually have to support them with savings. Among these cities, there are very active college ministries. They all try to focus on discipleship to prepare them once they graduate. Yet, a high percentage young Christians are lost due to lack of follow up. Let us keep praying for all who are disciplining the college students.

Friday
The “fifth year college student” is a phenomenon of unemployed college graduates. They usually claim they are studying to get into graduate schools, living near campus, enjoying the campus facilities but are not enrolled as students. Unemployed college graduates experience stress, depression, and impaired self-esteem because parents expect them to start making money. Let us pray for all the believers who are not able to find work or are unemployed. May they not lose trust and faith in God who promises that He will always provide for us.

Saturday
The government estimates that varying degrees of violence occur in 1/3 of all Chinese households. In 90% of cases, wives are the victims and 100,000 homes are destroyed every year because of violence in the home. Very few battered women report to police because of shame. Christian women who are abused have no outlets for advice or consolation in the church either. Let us pray along with all the believers who live with abusive husbands as they struggle with decision of separation and beyond.

Sunday
In Taiwan, there are almost 300,000 “foreign brides”- wives who came from Mainland China, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. These families are frequently ostracized because of their lack of language ability, education, and family support. The incidences of marital violence are very high among them. Many Taiwan churches are involved in helping the foreign brides, through teaching Chinese, assistance, and Bible study groups. Let us pray for these ministries and all those who show compassion, who are doing the cross-cultural mission at home.

Monday
This year, a total of 5.59 millions college students will graduate, which is 640,000 more than 2007. In the past, only 2 in 3 will find job and this year will be even harder for all the college graduates. There is an alarming trend of these unemployed, highly educated people to turn to criminal activities. Many observe that college students lack appreciation for ethics and traditional values. We continue to pray for many who work with college students, through teaching English and Bible studies. May the Lord give them wisdom in disciplining these new converts.

Prayer Request 5/6 -- 5/12

Tuesday
One of the challenging problems confronting House Churches is the working of evil spirits such as Qi gong, fortune telling, etc. Many national believers are attracted to the marvels of wonders and paranormal activities and although the Bible warns believers not to dabble in such practices, many are still drawn to what they consider supernatural power. Let us pray for strong teaching against such movements in the church and the loss of wayward sheep through them.

Wednesday
For many of the young “post-1980”couples, their ideas of marriage are very different than that of their parents. They emphasize "liberty", demand individual privacy, and an unrestricted circle of friends as well the ability to participate in individual activities. The thinking and worldview of these young people is foreign to their elders, especially in the Chinese churches. But we cannot give up this whole generation. May the Lord give wisdom and patience to people in the churches and help them to know how to connect and minister to all young people.

Thursday
"Going Dutch" or each one paying for his/her share of their financial obligations is popular among young couples in China whether they are married or not. Husbands make the mortgage payments and wives pay the living expenses. They each support their parents individually. They claim that this way, in case of divorce, the financial affairs are simplified. Let us intercede along with all Christian parents praying for their children who are starting their families, especially those who marry unbelievers. We desire their children to know and love the Lord as their parents do.

Friday
We praise God because there are more young people in many urban churches in the last ten years than there were in the past. But there are issues about marriage for these young singles. Many women believers feel disappointed or have lost hope in seeking a potential mate among believers. Marriage counseling is very new or unheard of among churches in China and many of those who do counseling are women pastors. Let us pray for faith for all of those who want to get married and desire to honor God in their marriage.

Saturday
When Chinese believers have a family crisis or marital conflict, seeking counseling from the pastor is rarely an option because they are unavailable and/or untrained to do it. Counseling is generally done by older, mature ladies in the church and is limited to prayer and advice only. Marital problems among believers are of epidemic proportions and the counseling ministry is in its infancy in Chinese churches. Let us pray that faith in God is lived out in the homes of all believers, especially in those of people who are married to unbelievers or lukewarm Christians.

Sunday
Henan is the most populous province, but it is also one of the poorest. Many Henan people have left their villages with only an elementary-school education to seek work in cities and other provinces. Seeking a better life in cities is the main reason that is driving the tidal wave of migrant workers in China. Many migrant workers were once church attendees back in their villages, but they have not found places of worship in cities. Let us pray for continuing faith for all the Henan migrant workers and some Wenzhou-supported churches, who are reaching out to them.

Monday
One reason why China has the world’s highest rate of female suicide is that rural women continue to have little social status. The traditional low view of women is pervasive in most villages, especially the poor regions. There is a huge divide between the women in the cities and in the villages. Let us pray for all the rural sisters in Christ, may they be spiritually strong, not only in their families but also reaching out to help other women in their neighborhood.
