Prayer Request 5/30--6/5

Tuesday
A major coal mine tragedy hit Shanxi province, with 57 miners missing. High demand for coal and high wages for such a dangerous job lead to frequent safety violations. The government immediately arrested those who were in charge of the mine operation. Mining is the most dangerous profession in China. 6,000 miners perished last year. Serving the Lord in China has risks and dangers too. Let us pray for comfort for the families of all the lost miners and those who are not able to be united with their families .

Wednesday
China has 1.35 million nurses but is considered to have the lowest number of nurses per capita. The traditional Chinese medical mentality emphasizes treatment, not nursing care. Currently, China faces a shortage of 1 million nurses. Despite the shortage, China “exports” nearly 800 nurses yearly, mainly to the Middle East and Singapore. Let us pray for countless Christian nurses who openly share their faith with patients, in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong .

Thursday
Actress Gong Li and Miss Li, the amateur winner of Super Female Voice contest, were among those honored as “The 50 Most Beautiful Chinese.” Miss Li is considered tomboyish and fair in appearance; she beat out many other well-known actors and actress. Several house church leaders were honored by President Bush recently. We pray for tens of thousands more who serve the Lord silently and sacrificially, who will only be honored as “most faithful servants” by God Himself .

Friday
200 million Chinese live with less than one US dollar a day, at a level of extreme poverty set by the UN. According to China’s own poverty level, there are still 23 millions who live with less than 683 yuans (85 USD) a year, without enough to eat. The chasm between the wealthy and the extreme poor has become so appalling. Let us pray for China’s churches in discovering their call and role in showing compassion and reaching out to the poor .

Saturday
Surprisingly, 70 % of Chinese professionals are “dissatisfied” accordingly to a semi-official survey. Teachers, health care workers and reporters are the worst off. Dissatisfaction is defined as lack of “meaning,” “reasonable reimbursement” or “job security.” We do not know how satisfied China’s church workers are. Let us remember the dedication and faithfulness of all those who serve because they love the Lord even though wages are so low. We too pray for the spiritual renewal of all who have given up ministry .

Sunday
40% of Beijing junior and high school student are deeply involved in Internet fortune- telling. Nationwide, about half of the young people believe there are benefits in such a practice and would base their decisions on fortune-telling. 2 in 3 high school students tried using online fortune-telling for fun. Let us pray for this alarming trend and for the guarding of young believers who are also tempted to try such practices .

Monday
The Sports Lottery issued in 1984 by the government in the Fujian Province is the oldest and biggest gambling system in all of China. Tickets are sold nationwide and contribute greatly to Fujian's sports-related industries, games, promotions and advertising. On the southern coast, Fujian was once the stronghold of Christian churches and schools in China. Churches there have been vibrant but recently have had their activities restricted. Let us remember the vitality of all the believers and workers there .

Prayer Request 5/23--5/29

Tuesday
A prominent Chinese scientist was disgraced and dismissed from his post in the Shanghai Jiaotong University. His “new” electronic chip turned out to be a commercially available Motorola chip with a Chinese sticker on it. Academic fraud is not uncommon. Unfortunately, fraudulent claims of the size of congregation and extent of ministry abound in China too. Let us pray for this disturbing trend, wisdom and discernment and above all, blameless conscience and integrity of God's workers .

Wednesday
College students often don't know how to manage their finances and are "immature consumers" according to experts. A high spending pattern of money supplied by their parents may not be a good thing at all. A lack of transparency and poor accounting practices continue to plague good stewardship of money in many churches in China. We continue to pray for faithfulness and stewardship of that with which the Master entrusts us: talents, time, and resource .

Thursday
The list of “Top 10 universities” was released recently with no surprises. China has a total of 887 universities, 119 of which are so-called major universities, 548 regular universities and 220 private colleges. Campus ministry can be found in the top-tier universities. Some Bible studies, often off-campus and others done personally, are led by missionaries enrolled as students. We remember all the outreach effort, especially those who enroll themselves as students to reach students .

Friday
Ruili, Yunnan is one of the first cities in which HIV was detected in China. Drug use and prostitution fuel the spread of HIV because of the China-Burma highway which runs through the city. Poor Burmese flock to this border city famous for gems and cheap sex. Churches in this often sensitive border area are few and weak. As we pray for China, let us not forget the southern borders and the so-called "AIDS Highway ".

Saturday
By a law enacted in 1982, every Chinese must plant 3-5 trees a year. But, in cities, there are no places to plant more trees, and in the rural areas, few people bother to plant and definitely not on their own farmable land. Believers know sharing the Gospel with others is the Biblical mandate, but, few actually do it. Let us pray for the revival of the sense of evangelism of all churches and believers .

Sunday
Shanghai hosted the very first “Millionaire Fair,” selling 300 brands of super-luxury goods including a 33,000 gold-plated bathtub. The fair lasted 3 days, drawing 10,000 visitors who paid 350-1500 yuan each to enter Plenty of people can afford luxuries and want to flaunt it too. As China becomes so materialistic has the golden period of evangelism passed? Let us redouble our effort in evangelism, calling China’s church to reach out of their comfort zone and witness .

Monday
There are at least 500,000 Chinese laborers who work abroad, sending home a huge amount of money. Many feel this is the only way out of poverty and are willing to go even to war-torn countries such as Pakistan and Iraq. Many countries welcome these low-cost, semi-skilled contract workers. Chinese churches have sent out trained missionaries as laborers to the Middle East, to share the Gospel with fellow Chinese and the Muslims. Let us remember these pioneer Christian workers .

Prayer Request 5/16--5/22

Tuesday
Buying and growing cactus plants is the newest kind of fraud scheme in China. Because they thought they were valuable, 5800 farmers spent $12,500,000 USD buying and growing Mexican wild cacti in green houses. Believers as well as poor farmers have tried many get-rich-quick projects. Church members are often involved in selling these products creating headaches or even disruption for the leaders. Let us pray for the guarding of hearts of both believers and leaders from greed .

Wednesday
Businessmen from Taiwan invest in high tech schemes and also in agribusiness in Fujian, Hainan, Shandong, and the Northeast of China. These businesses tend to be large farms or factories making all kinds of things from instant noodles to fancy mushroom products for consumption in China and also for export. Let us pray for the spiritual needs of these hundreds of thousands of businessmen whose reputation is "big spender and party animal" and pray especially for ministries directed to this huge group .

Thursday
Among those who seek out the service of the booming marriage introduction agencies, women outnumber men five to three. Generally a woman older than 28 is considered "old" when it comes to marriage.Ladies in China have a harder time finding a husband than vice versa. As we understand the pressure our sisters face, let us remember all who have married unbelievers and pray for their continuing faith, witness to their families, and church involvement .

Friday
Beijing's appointment of the Bishop of Kunming, has brought attention to the churches in this impoverished southwest province. Earlier missionaries by their heroic and sacrificial service took the gospel to many ethnic minorities and there are churches in many remote villages. A lack of adequately trained church workers makes church growth very slow. Let us remember all the foreign and national church workers there, including those who are translating the Bible into tribal languages.

Saturday
Beijing approved an extradition pact with Spain to bring back officials who had swindled funds and fled to foreign countries and will then waive the death penalty of more than $1250. USD which is usually imposed on these people. Currently there are 4000 of these officials abroad with 5000 million USD of swindled funds. We pray for the guarding of the hearts of all church workers who face great and constant temptation in handling church funds.

Sunday
Hangzhou hosted the very first World Buddhism Conference, attended by 2000 monks, scholars and officials. Buddhism is enjoying a phenomenal resurgence with temples erected everywhere and popularity among the young people. We do not know when a similar Christian conference could be held inside China. We pray for the upcoming large conference of Chinese churches in Macau, which will be attended by China churches and officials .

Monday
According to a marketer's study, the average child in Tianjin has six pairs of shoes--leather, cloth, canvas, rain-proof, ice-skating, and tennis shoes. In the past ten years Tianjin has enjoyed an economic boom with many highly-paid professionals there. The disparity between rural and urban churches is very great in China. Rural churches literally have no material for their children's ministry while city churches have keyboards and children's hymnals. Let us remember this great need for resources and training in the rural churches.

Prayer Request 5/9--5/14

Tuesday
Five Chinese were selected as Time Magazine's 100 most influential persons of the year 2006. They are Wen jiabao (Chinese premier), Lee (director), Huang (richest businessman), Cheng (human rights activist) and Ma (environmental scientist). The younger generation of believers lacks contemporary role models. We pray for rising up of Christians who could inspire them in serving God, church and the community. We pray for raising up of Christians who would inspire them to serve God, church and the community .

Wednesday
The relationship between the Vatican and Beijing suffered over the ordination of the Bishop of Kunming. China insists that it has its right to appoint any religious personnel. To be recognized as an approved church workers means completion from state-approved seminaries or one year worth of training classes. We take this time to pray for the spiritual growth, personal walk with the Lord of all who have such officially-recognized status .

Thursday
The Cultural Revolution began 40 years ago with Mao's "May 16th Directive" and led to 10 years of great persecution to churches and believers. However, there is a new "leftist" sentiment emerging with Mao's popularity at an all time high. Let us remember all the believers who suffered through the tumultuous decade. May the Lord continue to use their experience to embolden the younger generation in strengthening of faith through testing.

Friday
The Cultural Revolution should have been a lesson against the worship or idolizing of any human being. One word of Mao caused the suffering of countless millions. Yet there are many laborers, farmers, and soldiers who have missed the benefits of the recent economic reform. Laborers in the cities and the people in the military are probably the largest block of unreached people in China with no efforts toward reaching them. We remember these two groups who are resentful and feeling hopeless.

Saturday
Although Party officials enjoyed better lives while everyone suffered miserably during the Cultural Revolution. Today people despise and hate Party officials because of their rampant corruption.Unfortunately, such distrust of leadership has spilled over to churches. Salary differences among various types of churches have caused mistrust and verbal attacks. We pray for this alarming trend which has further deepened the lack of unity of China churches.

Sunday
The line between gift giving and bribery is often blurred in giving wedding gifts to the children of Party officials. At the same time as the Party says it is trying to crack down on such abuses, their members send out an excessive number of invitations and host super-lavish banquets. Attending a wedding banquet is a joyful occasion for Chinese believers. Let us pray for many who purposely use such occasions to share their faith with their friends and families .

Monday
Nearly 16% of people in China are illiterate or semi-illiterate. Visitors to rural churches are touched by the deep love for God all the illiterate believers have and they are also impressed by the hymns they have memorized. Illiteracy poses a serious problem for deeper Biblical teaching. Falling into heresy and occults are a common problem for illiterate believers. Let us pray especially for the faithfulness and spiritual protection of all believers who cannot read the Word of God for themselves .

Prayer Request 5/2--5/8

Tuesday
Fake or blatantly false medical advertisements about hospitals and medicines flood Chinese media. Official says about 2.5 million Chinese took the wrong medication because of misleading advertising. Cure for Hepatitis and AIDS are seen everywhere. Let us pray for phenomenon of many preachers who claim believing in Jesus can cure all illness too. We lift up our prayer for sound doctrine and preaching in many house churches .

Wednesday
Every first weekend of April is the National Tree Planting Day. In 1981, Deng Xiaoping made it a law that everyone 11 years and older must plant 3-5 trees a year. So far, only 46% of citizens have done so.A Chinese saying goes, “If you have a decade, plant a tree; if you have a century, train the people.” Let us pray for the discipleship of all the college students who found salvation through the campus ministries this year .

Thursday
According to government officials, in China only thirteen percent of people who have tuberculosis are treated. Each year there are 4.5 million cases mostly in rural villages and about 130,000 of them die. Many believers who work as physicians and nurses have been effective in sharing Jesus with their patients. Let us remember the many hospitals staffed with primarily Christian staffs .

Friday
A survey of college students in a university in Zhejiang shows that 75% of the students spend up to a thousand yuan ($125.US) a month. This "free spending" pattern is like that of working professionals. Most will agree that college students are particularly open and receptive to the gospel. However, material wealth has diminished the spiritual hunger of many young people. Let us remember all those who are involved in reaching students .

Saturday
A shortage of factory laborers is a real problem in China. The wages in the Guangzhou area continue to spiral upward and many are shopping around for higher pay. So far, exporters have absorbed the increased labor costs and have not passed them on to consumers. The shortage of workers is particularly acute since many choose to go to cities for work and for better education for their children. Let us again remember the desperate need for church workers, their families, and the education of their children .

Sunday
More than seventy-seven percent of college students own cell phones (mostly high-end equipments) and more than half of them also have computers. Of the computer users, sixty percent use them for games and chatting and only twenty-six percent use them for study. On-line sermons and Bible study CD's are popular among believers who have computers and are often the way to get Christian instruction. Let us remember all the ministries which make their materials available on-line for churches in China .

Monday
In Guangdong, 70% of singles over 35 are women. The influx of workers from the inland contributes to this phenomenon; many girls trying hard to marry the Guangdong men, while men go back home to marry. Experts encourage these women to marry younger men; despite the “Marriage Laws” mandating husband must be 1-2 years older than wife. Let us remember all the single believers who experience social and parental pressure to accept a non-believer, simply to be married .
